May led the Volunteers to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) championship in 1914, the first championship of any kind for the Tennessee program. May threw two touchdown passes to Goat Carroll in the 16–14 victory over Vanderbilt, the first ever victory over the Tennessee rival.{{Cite web |last=West |first=Marvin |date=September 16, 2014 |title=Tennessee Football 100 Years Ago |url=http://shoppernewsnow.com/marvin-west/tennessee-football-100-years-ago/ |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141113080740/http://shoppernewsnow.com/marvin-west/tennessee-football-100-years-ago/ |archive-date=November 13, 2014 |access-date=January 26, 2015 |website=Shopper News Now}}{{Cite journal |title=Vols Score First Win Over Vandy |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=1DdGDICfs4gC&pg=PA12 |journal=Greatest Moments in Tennessee |page=12 |isbn=9781582610788 |via=Google Books/The Commercial Appeal}} Carroll scored all of the Vols points, adding a field goal in between touchdowns. Irby Curry scored all of Vanderbilt's points. An account of the first Tennessee touchdown reads, "Four minutes of play had barely drifted by when Tennessee's weird, mystic, elusive forward pass, May to Carroll, deadly in accuracy, went sailing home for the first touchdown of the game. The chesty Tennessee quarterback sent the oval whizzing for a distance of thirty-five yards and Carroll gathered in the ball near his goal line, when he hurried beneath the posts with all the speed at his command."{{Cite journal |year=1915 |title=Athletics |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=61zOAAAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA92 |journal=The University of Tennessee Record|via=Google Books |volume=18 |issue=5 |page=65}}
