Distribution
Bironella is predominantly found in Australia, with one species, Bironella obscura, also found in New Guinea.{{Cite journal |last=Tenorio |first=Joaquin A. |date=1977-11-30 |title=Revision of the Genus Bironella (Diptera: Culicidae)1 |url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jmedent/14.3.317 |journal=Journal of Medical Entomology |volume=14 |issue=3 |pages=317–361 |doi=10.1093/jmedent/14.3.317 |issn=1938-2928}}
Species
The genus Bironella comprises eight described species, which are divided into three subgenera: Bironella Theobald (two species), Brugella Edwards (three species), and Neobironella Tenorio (three species).{{Cite journal |last=Tenorio |first=Joaquin A. |date=1975-01-10 |title=Bironella {Brugella) Obscura, a New Species of Mosquito from New Guinea (Diptera: Culicidae)1 |url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jmedent/11.6.734 |journal=Journal of Medical Entomology |volume=11 |issue=6 |pages=734–738 |doi=10.1093/jmedent/11.6.734 |issn=1938-2928}}
Phylogenetic relationships
Within the subfamily Anophelinae, Bironella appears to be the sister taxon to the genus Anopheles. In contrast, Chagasia forms the outgroup, highlighting its distinct evolutionary lineage within this subfamily.{{Cite journal |last=Vas |first=Zoltán |last2=Szőke |first2=Viktória |date=2022 |title=New species and genera described in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in 2021 |url=http://dx.doi.org/10.53019/annlsmushistnathung.2022.114.177 |journal=Annales Musei historico-naturalis hungarici |issue=114 |pages=177–186 |doi=10.53019/annlsmushistnathung.2022.114.177 |issn=0521-4726}}
