Controversy

In 2016, Televisa realized people watched Netflix more than cable television. In an attempt to re-gain their lost viewers, they decided to remove all of their original content from Netflix. They then created their own Netflix-like streaming service, called Blim. Soon after Televisa announced Blim, Mexicans began mocking them through Internet memes for producing lesser-quality original content compared to Netflix's more critically acclaimed original content.{{cite web|url=http://yucatan.com.mx/espectaculos/breves-del-espectaculo/memes-se-lanzan-contra-blim|title="Memes" se lanzan contra Blim - El Diario de Yucatán|website=yucatan.com.mx|access-date=25 July 2017|language=es|archive-date=30 March 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190330023000/http://yucatan.com.mx/espectaculos/breves-del-espectaculo/memes-se-lanzan-contra-blim|url-status=dead}} Netflix itself released an ad which made fun of Televisa's original content. It criticized Blim and Televisa for the perceived lesser quality of their content, as well as for removing it from Netflix. The ad featured a man acting sad because Televisa's original content was removed, with his mom looking at him strangely.{{cite web|url=https://www.forbes.com.mx/netflix-se-burla-de-televisa-y-rebelde/#gs.EtJ8xNM|title=Netflix se burla de Televisa y Rebelde - Forbes Mexico|date=4 October 2016|access-date=25 July 2017|language=es}} Televisa retaliated by releasing an ad where a look-a-like man was happy having subscribed to Blim.{{cite web|url=http://regeneracion.mx/blim-intenta-burlarse-de-netflix-y-nada-sale-bien/|title=Blim intenta burlarse de Netflix y todo sale mal (VIDEO)|date=25 October 2016|access-date=25 July 2017|language=es}} However Televisa's ad did not get the response they expected. It only caused more unfavorable criticism compared to Netflix. Blim and Televisa were even more heavily criticized for not understanding Millennials,{{quotation needed|date=October 2018}} some of whom went as far as thanking Televisa for removing their content from Netflix. The main argument against Televisa was that there was no need to pay for a streaming service to see series that are available to watch on YouTube without needing to buy cable in the first place.{{cite web|title=Dos semanas probando Blim|url=http://www.eluniversal.com.mx/blogs/alejandro-aleman/2016/03/11/dos-semanas-probando-blim|website=eluniversal.com.mx|access-date=26 July 2017|language=es}}{{cite web|url=http://www.sdpnoticias.com/enelshow/television/2016/02/22/blim-copia-de-netflix-fracasara-porque-televisa-no-entiende-a-los-mileniales|title=Blim, copia de Netflix, fracasará porque Televisa no entiende a los mileniales|date=22 February 2016|access-date=25 July 2017|language=es|archive-date=14 August 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160814042128/http://www.sdpnoticias.com/enelshow/television/2016/02/22/blim-copia-de-netflix-fracasara-porque-televisa-no-entiende-a-los-mileniales|url-status=dead}}
