Bone morphogenetic protein receptors are serine-threonine kinase receptors. Transforming growth factor beta family proteins bind to these receptors.{{cite journal | vauthors = Miyazono K, Kamiya Y, Morikawa M | title = Bone morphogenetic protein receptors and signal transduction | journal = Journal of Biochemistry | volume = 147 | issue = 1 | pages = 35–51 | date = January 2010 | pmid = 19762341 | doi = 10.1093/jb/mvp148 | doi-access = free }} There are four bone morphogenetic protein receptors:{{cite journal| vauthors = Pasche B |date= December 2008 |title=The TGF Family. Structure
Both type 1 and 2 bone morphogenetic protein receptors have a single transmembrane segment. Additionally, both types have a cysteine-rich extracellular domain and a cytoplasmic serine threonine kinase domain.{{cite journal | vauthors = Mace PD, Cutfield JF, Cutfield SM | title = High resolution structures of the bone morphogenetic protein type II receptor in two crystal forms: implications for ligand binding | journal = Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications | volume = 351 | issue = 4 | pages = 831–8 | date = December 2006 | pmid = 17094948 | doi = 10.1016/j.bbrc.2006.10.109 }} Type 1 contains a glycine-serine-rich domain to be phosphorylated by type 2 kinase domain, initiating the signaling transduction pathway of the SMAD signaling cascade. The wrist epitope motif on BMP-2 has a high-affinity binding site for BMPR-IA. The knuckle epitope motif on BMP-2 has a low-affinity binding site for BMPR-II.{{cite book | vauthors = Miyazono K, Shimanuki T | chapter = Chapter 55: Bone morphogenetic protein receptors and actions. | veditors = Bilezikian JP, Raisz LG, Martin TJ | title = Principles of bone biology | edition = Third | date = January 2008 | pages = 1177–1196 |place=San Diego | publisher = Academic Press |isbn=978-0-12-373884-4 | doi = 10.1016/B978-0-12-373884-4.00069-0 }}
