Early life

Hart describes how she was told she experienced "heteronormative sexual training from a really early age", through multiple intersex medical interventions. Despite giving consent as a child, she felt unaware of the lifelong implications.{{Cite web| last = Copland| first = Simon| title = The medical community's approach to intersex people is still primarily focused on 'normalising' surgeries| work = SBS| date = 15 December 2016| accessdate = 19 January 2017| url = http://www.sbs.com.au/topics/sexuality/agenda/article/2016/12/15/medical-communitys-approach-intersex-people-still-primarily-focused-normalising| archive-date = 31 January 2017| archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20170131201328/http://www.sbs.com.au/topics/sexuality/agenda/article/2016/12/15/medical-communitys-approach-intersex-people-still-primarily-focused-normalising| url-status = dead}} Hart describes how stigma "sets the scene" for such interventions, "There’s a fear that people will be maladjusted because their bodies are different, and that fear teamed with the ignorance of the realities of what it’s like to live as an adult with those bodies without surgery, kind of perpetuates a surgical intervention process". Growing up, Hart did not know that her sister, Phoebe Hart, also had androgen insensitivity syndrome.{{Cite news| last = Graham| first = Liz| title = I'm proud to be a hermaphrodite| work = body+soul| date = 2 February 2012| url = http://www.bodyandsoul.com.au/sex+relationships/wellbeing/im+proud+to+be+a+hermaphrodite,16555}}
