Botkul ({{langx|kk|Боткөл}}; {{langx|ru|Боткуль}}) is a bittern salt lake in the Kazakhstan–Russia border.{{cite web|url=https://maps.vlasenko.net/smtm1000/m-38.jpg|title=M-38 Topographic Chart (in Russian)|access-date=31 July 2022}}
There is no salt mining at the lake. Its waters have a bitter, stinging taste and a strong smell of hydrogen sulfide. The authorities are exploring the potential of developing Botkul as a tourist attraction.[https://water-rf.ru/%D0%92%D0%BE%D0%B4%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B5_%D0%BE%D0%B1%D1%8A%D0%B5%D0%BA%D1%82%D1%8B/1949/%D0%91%D0%BE%D1%82%D0%BA%D1%83%D0%BB%D1%8C Water of Russia - Боткуль]
Geography
Botkul is an endorheic lake located east of the course of the Volga in the Caspian Lowland, about {{convert|40|km|sp=us}} to the south of lake Elton. The main river feeding its waters is the Solyonaya, a small stream flowing from the west. The lake is shallow and in years of drought it dries completely up.[https://www.booksite.ru/fulltext/1/001/008/129/145.htm Боткуль]; Great Soviet Encyclopedia in 30 vols. — Ch. ed. A.M. Prokhorov. - 3rd ed. - M. Soviet Encyclopedia, 1969-1978. (in Russian)Google Earth
Botkul is surrounded by salt marshes. The Kazakhstan–Russia border runs across the middle of the lake from NNE to SSW. The western part of the lake lies in Pallasovsky District, Volgograd Oblast, Russian Federation and the eastern in Bokey Orda District, West Kazakhstan Region, Kazakhstan. Saykyn, located to the northeast, is the nearest village.
