Signs and symptoms

Bowenoid papulosis is defined by the appearance of one or more reddish-brown papules or plaques in the anogenital region that can last for a few weeks to several years. Although some patients occasionally report itching in relation to affected perianal skin areas, the majority of individuals do not exhibit any symptoms.{{cite book | last=IACOBUZIO-DONAHUE | first=CHRISTINE A. | title=Surgical Pathology of the GI Tract, Liver, Biliary Tract, and Pancreas | chapter=Inflammatory and Neoplastic Disorders of the Anal Canal | publisher=Elsevier | year=2009 | isbn=978-1-4160-4059-0 | doi=10.1016/b978-141604059-0.50031-x | pages=733–761}}

Causes

Although the exact cause of bowenoid papulosis is unknown, immunologic, viral, and chemical factors have all been proposed. There have been multiple occurrences of bowenoid papulosis where HPV DNA was found.{{cite book | last1=Ro | first1=Jae Y. | last2=Kim | first2=Kyu-Rae | last3=Amin | first3=Mahul B. | last4=Ayala | first4=Alberto G. | title=Urologic Surgical Pathology | chapter=Penis and scrotum | publisher=Elsevier | year=2008 | isbn=978-0-323-01970-5 | doi=10.1016/b978-0-323-01970-5.50017-8 | pages=890–950}}

Diagnosis

Bowenoid papulosis diagnosis requires a history, histologic examination, and clinical description of the condition.{{cite book | last=Gross | first=G. | title=Genital Papillomavirus Infections | chapter=Bowenoid Papulosis | publisher=Springer Berlin Heidelberg | publication-place=Berlin, Heidelberg | date=1990 | isbn=978-3-642-75725-9 | doi=10.1007/978-3-642-75723-5_14 | pages=189–207}}

Treatment

Bowenoid papulosis is typically treated with locally destructive or ablative therapies, including 5-fluorouracil, electrocoagulation, cryotherapy, and surgical excision or razor excision. Imiquimod has also been applied with good results.{{cite book | last=Weedon | first=David | title=Weedon's Skin Pathology | chapter=Viral diseases | publisher=Elsevier | year=2010 | isbn=978-0-7020-3485-5 | doi=10.1016/b978-0-7020-3485-5.00027-9 | page=607–631.e22}}
