The Bowl of Hygeia, {{angbr|🕏}}, is one of the symbols of pharmacology, and along with the Rod of Asclepius, it is one of the most ancient and important symbols related to medicine in western countries. Hygeia was the Greek goddess of health, hygiene, cleanliness, and sanitation, and the daughter of Asclepius, who she is often closely associated with e.g. in prayers and hymns. Asclepius' symbol is his rod, with a snake twined around it; correspondingly, Hygeia's symbol is a cup or chalice with a snake twined around its stem. Hygeia was also invoked, along with her father Asclepius, and Panacea in the original Hippocratic Oath.

Usage of symbol by pharmaceutical associations

The bowl of Hygeia has been used as a symbol of the pharmacy profession at least as far back as 1796, when it was used on a coin minted for the Parisian Society of Pharmacy.{{cite web|url=http://drugtopics.modernmedicine.com/drugtopics/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=116727 |title=History of the Bowl of Hygeia award | Drug Topics |publisher=Drugtopics.modernmedicine.com |date=2002-10-07 |accessdate=2013-04-26}} It has since been adopted by many more pharmaceutical associations worldwide, such as the American Pharmacists Association,{{cite web|url=http://www.wyeth.com/aboutwyeth/citizenship/companyawards/bowlofhygeia |title=Bowl of Hygeia Wyeth.com |date=2009-04-16 |accessdate=2013-04-26 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20090416212749/http://www.wyeth.com/aboutwyeth/citizenship/companyawards/bowlofhygeia |archivedate=April 16, 2009 }} the Canadian Pharmacists Association,{{cite web|url=http://www.pharmacists.ca/ |title=Home – CPhA |publisher=Pharmacists.ca |date= |accessdate=2013-04-26}} the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia,{{cite web|url=http://www.psa.org.au/|title=Pharmaceutical Society of Australia}} and the Doctor of Pharmacy Association,{{cite web|url=http://www.dpapharm.org/|title=Doctor of Pharmacy Association -|publisher=|access-date=2013-08-03|archive-date=2012-12-26|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121226001952/http://www.dpapharm.org/|url-status=dead}} Conseil de l'Ordre des Pharmaciens in France{{cite web|url=http://www.ordre.pharmacien.fr/Nos-missions/Assurer-la-defense-de-l-honneur-et-de-l-independance/La-protection-de-la-croix-verte-et-du-caducee |title=La protection de la croix verte et du caducée – Nos missions – Ordre National des Pharmaciens |language=fr |publisher=Ordre.pharmacien.fr |date=2012-06-14 |accessdate=2013-04-26}} (where is written in law with another symbol, the green Greek cross).{{cite web|url=http://legifrance.gouv.fr/affichCodeArticle.do?idArticle=LEGIARTI000006913709&cidTexte=LEGITEXT000006072665&dateTexte=20130110&oldAction=rechCodeArticle |title=Code de la santé publique – Article R4235-53 |language=fr |publisher=Legifrance |date=2004-07-29 |accessdate=2013-04-26}}

The bowl of Hygeia is a common symbol on signs outside of pharmacies in Europe. A mortar and pestle is a more common symbol in the United States.
