History

Brave Search was developed following the acquisition of Tailcat, a privacy-focused search engine from Cliqz, a subsidiary of Hubert Burda Media based in Germany.{{Cite web|title=Brave's privacy-focused search engine is available in beta|url=https://www.engadget.com/brave-search-engine-beta-160013566.html|access-date=2022-01-16|website=Engadget|date=22 June 2021 |language=en-US}}{{cite web |date=22 June 2021 |title=Brave's privacy-focused search engine is available in beta |url=https://www.engadget.com/brave-search-engine-beta-160013566.html |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220118182347/https://www.engadget.com/brave-search-engine-beta-160013566.html |archive-date=18 January 2022 |access-date=16 January 2022 |website=Engadget}}{{cite news |date=3 March 2021 |title=Brave acquires search engine |url=https://brave.com/brave-search/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210323234315/https://brave.com/brave-search/ |archive-date=23 March 2021 |access-date=21 March 2021 |work=Brave website |publisher=Brave Software, Inc.}}{{cite web |last=Shankland |first=Stephen |title=Google gets a new rival as Brave Search opens to the public |url=https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/google-gets-a-new-rival-as-brave-search-opens-to-the-public/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210822201811/https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/google-gets-a-new-rival-as-brave-search-opens-to-the-public/ |archive-date=22 August 2021 |access-date=22 August 2021 |website=CNET}}

In October 2021, Brave Search was made the default search engine for Brave browser users in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom (replacing Google Search), France (replacing Qwant) and Germany (replacing DuckDuckGo).{{Cite web|last=Porter|first=Jon|date=2021-10-20|title=Brave browser replaces Google with its own search engine|url=https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/20/22736142/brave-browser-search-engine-default-google-quant-duckduckgo-web-discovery-project|access-date=2022-01-16|website=The Verge|language=en}}

In June 2022, Brave Search ended its beta stage and was fully released along with an announcement that within its year-long beta testing period, it surpassed 2.5 billion total queries.{{cite web |date=3 March 2021 |title=Brave is launching its own search engine with the help of ex-Cliqz devs and tech |url=https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/03/brave-is-launching-its-own-search-engine-with-the-help-of-ex-cliqz-devs-and-tech/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20211126115721/https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/03/brave-is-launching-its-own-search-engine-with-the-help-of-ex-cliqz-devs-and-tech/ |archive-date=26 November 2021 |access-date=12 June 2021 |website=TechCrunch}}{{cite magazine |title=Privacy-First Browser Brave Is Launching a Search Engine |url=https://www.wired.com/story/privacy-first-browser-brave-launching-search-engine |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210612082157/https://www.wired.com/story/privacy-first-browser-brave-launching-search-engine/ |archive-date=12 June 2021 |access-date=12 June 2021 |magazine=Wired |issn=1059-1028}}{{cite web |date=22 June 2022 |title=Brave Search passes 2.5 billion queries in its first year, and debuts Goggles feature that allows users to choose their own search rankings |url=https://brave.com/search-anniversary/ |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220705191402/https://brave.com/search-anniversary/ |archive-date=5 July 2022 |access-date=5 July 2022 |website=Brave Browser}}

Features

Brave Search uses its own web index to generate search results with the aid of the WDP project.{{Cite web |last=Brereton |first=Dmitri |date=2022-05-06 |title=Interview with Brave Search |url=https://dkb.blog/p/brave-search-interview |access-date=2023-02-16 |website=dkb.blog |language=en}}

However, the user can allow the Brave browser to anonymously check Google for the same query.{{cite web |url=https://search.brave.com/help/google-fallback |title=Google fallback mixing |website=search.brave.com}}

= Discussions =

A feature that shows conversations related to the search query, such as comments on the website Reddit.{{Cite web|access-date=2022-06-24|title=Web Discovery Project Overview|url=https://brave.com/discussions-in-brave-search/|website=Brave|date=20 April 2022 |language=en-US}}

When a user searches and scrolls down, if available a discussions section will be there, and it will contain various forums where and the user can click one to see an answer from a user from an online community.

= Goggles =

A feature that allows users to apply their own rules and filters to a search.{{Cite web |title=Brave's privacy-focused Google alternative lets you customize your search rankings |url=https://www.pcworld.com/article/794153/braves-privacy-focused-search-engine-exits-beta-with-huge-numbers-and-a-new-feature.html |access-date=2022-06-24 |language=en-US}}

= Search API =

In May of 2023, Brave announced that it had launched a Search API.https://brave.com/blog/search-api-launch/ Brave Search API is an interface that allows developers to integrate search functionalities from the Brave Search engine into their applications.https://brave.com/search/api/

= Answer with AI =

Brave Search Premium

Users can optionally create an account with Brave Search Premium to support Brave Search directly involving data-collection.

As of January 2025, Brave Search is an ad-free website, but it will eventually switch to a new model that will include ads and premium users will get an ad-free experience.{{Cite web |last=Brave |title=What is Brave Search Premium? |url=https://search.brave.com/help/premium |access-date=2022-06-24 |website=Brave Browser |language=en-US}}

Data collection

User data including IP addresses won't be collected from its users by default.{{Cite magazine |last=Burgess |first=Matt |title=Privacy-First Browser Brave Is Launching a Search Engine |url=https://www.wired.co.uk/article/brave-browser-search |access-date=2022-03-10 |magazine=Wired |language=en-US |issn=1059-1028}}

However, Brave Search implements some level of data collect when users opt in through the Web Discovery Project (WDP).{{Cite web |title=What is the Web Discovery Project? |url=https://github.com/brave/web-discovery-project/blob/dab84c20d00ed19699995c848466a18b587a84d0/modules/web-discovery-project/sources/README.md |access-date=2022-06-24 |website=GitHub |language=en-US}} No account is required for this function.{{Cite web |title=What is the Web Discovery Project? |url=https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409406835469-What-is-the-Web-Discovery-Project- |access-date=2022-06-24 |website=Brave |language=en-US}}

As of May 2022, it covered over 10 billion pages and was used to serve 92% of search results without relying on any third-parties, with the remainder being retrieved server-side from the Bing API or (on an opt-in basis) client-side from Google.

Limitations

According to Brave, the index was kept "intentionally smaller than that of Google or Bing" in order to help avoid spam and other low-quality content, with the disadvantage that "Brave Search is not yet as good as Google in recovering long-tail queries."
