Rugby union career

Pfaff was born in Durban and attended Hilton College. At school he won colours for many sports, including rugby union and boxing. After school he went to the University of Cape Town to study accounting and played rugby and cricket for Western Province.{{Cite book|title=SA Rugby Annual 2000|last=Colquhoun|first=Andy|publisher=SARFU & MWP Media Sport|year=2000|isbn=0958423156|location=Cape Town|pages=436}}

Pfaff made his provincial debut for {{rut|Western Province}} in 1952 and played flyhalf and centre for the union.{{Cite book|last=Parker|first=A. C.|title=W.P. Later in 1956 he captained the South African Universities rugby side on their tour of Europe.

Cricket career

Pfaff played first-class cricket for Western Province, making his debut during the 1952/53 season.{{Cite book|last=Parker|first=A. C.|title=W.P. cricket 100 - not out|date=1990|publisher=WPCU|isbn=0-620-14738-5|location=Cape Town|pages=26|oclc=122317315}} He played in all six matches when Western Province won the Currie Cup in 1952/53.
