History

The college opened in 1967 and was named after John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States and a Virginian. In July 2021, the Virginia State Board of Community Colleges renamed local institutions formerly named for enslavers or segregationists.{{cite news |last1=Weissman |first1=Sara |title=Name Changes for Several Virginia Community Colleges |url=https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2021/07/26/name-changes-several-virginia-community-colleges |access-date=5 August 2021 |work=Inside Higher Ed |date=July 26, 2021 |language=en}} The board allowed the college to rename itself Brightpoint Community College. Instead of venerating Tyler, a slave holder who sided with the Confederacy during the Civil War, the name "celebrates the heart and energy of [the] institution".{{cite news |last1=Kolenich |first1=Eric |title=John Tyler Community College changes name to Brightpoint |url=https://richmond.com/news/local/education/john-tyler-community-college-changes-name-to-brightpoint/article_fc17484d-74c1-5b37-81c3-929035f6d081.html |access-date=5 August 2021 |work=Richmond Times-Dispatch |date=July 22, 2021 |language=en}}{{cite press release |last1=Raspiller |first1=Edward |title=Naming Communication |date=July 22, 2021 |url=https://jtcc.edu/uploads/documents/naming_communication_072221.pdf |access-date=5 August 2021}} Additionally, names were redesignated for campus buildings and streets, including Bird Hall and Godwin Hall, both of which are named after Virginia politicians who supported racial segregation.{{cite news |title=Becoming Brightpoint |url=https://jtcc.edu/about/mission-vision-values/brightpoint-community-college |access-date=5 August 2021 |work=jtcc.edu |date=July 2021 |language=en}}
