Bromomethyl ethyl ketone is a brominated ketone with lachrymatory effects. It was used as a chemical warfare agent in World War I. Bromomethyl ethyl ketone was developed as an alternative to bromoacetone, because acetone, the precursor to bromoacetone, was required for explosives production.{{cite book |title=The War Gases |date=1939 |url=https://archive.org/details/The_War_Gases_Chemistry_and_Analysis_Sartori}}{{cite book |title=War gases, their identification and decontamination |date=1942 |publisher=New York, Interscience Publishers |url=https://archive.org/details/wargasestheiride00jacorich}}
