Brownlee Dam is a hydroelectric earth fill embankment dam in the western United States, on the Snake River along the Idaho-Oregon border (Washington County, Idaho in and Baker County in Oregon). In Hells Canyon at river mile 285, it impounds the Snake River in the {{convert|58|mi|km|adj=mid|-long}} Brownlee Reservoir.
Description
The dam is part of the Hells Canyon Project that also includes Hells Canyon Dam and Oxbow Dam, all built and operated by Idaho Power Company. The first and upper-most of the three dams,{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=865eAAAAIBAJ&sjid=ZS8MAAAAIBAJ&pg=1214%2C4724463 |work=Lewiston Morning Tribune |location=(Idaho) |agency=Associated Press |title=Idaho Power Co. diverts river through tunnel at Brownlee |date=October 12, 1956 |page=3}} its contractor was Morrison-Knudsen of Boise.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=vrYyAAAAIBAJ&sjid=OecDAAAAIBAJ&pg=7283%2C1434943 |newspaper=Spokesman-Review |location=Spokane, Washington |agency=Associated Press |title=Brownlee dam excavation job more than half done |date=April 21, 1957 |page=20 }} Filling started {{Time ago|1958}} on {{Start date|1958|5|9}}, flooding the community of Robinette, Oregon.
The dam's powerhouse contains five generating units with a total nameplate capacity of 585.4 megawatts.
Lacking passage for migrating salmon, the three Hells Canyon Project dams blocked access by anadromous salmonids to a stretch of the Snake River drainage basin from Hells Canyon Dam up to Shoshone Falls, which naturally prevents any upstream fish passage to the upper Snake River basin.{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=5fNXAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9vYDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5912%2C3223713 |newspaper=Spokane Daily Chronicle |title=Fence of voltage herds fish near Brownlee Dam |date=November 29, 1957 |page=15 }}
Heliport
There is a {{convert|100|by|60|ft|0|adj=on}} private heliport, Brownlee Heliport {{Airport codes|||OR75}}, located near the dam.
