Life

He was a graduate of Dover Grammar School for Boys.

He once taught at University of Birmingham{{cite web|url=http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/schools/metallurgy-materials/about/met-mat-history.aspx |title=History of the School of Metallurgy and Materials - University of Birmingham |publisher=Birmingham.ac.uk |date=2002-01-01 |access-date=2013-11-25}} and was the Professor of the Theory of Materials at the University of Sheffield from 1966 to 1984.

He was a colleague of Alan Cottrell.
