History

In 1977, rumors began to spread that the gum's soft, chewable secret was the addition of spider eggs.{{citation|title=Too Good to Be True: The Colossal Book of Urban Legends |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Sd6CeqJVuC4C&q=%22bubble+yum%22+history&pg=PA193 |page=92–93|last=Brunvand|first=Jan Harold|authorlink=Jan Harold Brunvand|date=1999|publisher=W. W. Norton & Company|isbn=0-393-04734-2}} The Life Savers Company addressed the issue with an official full-page rebuttal printed in prominent U.S. newspapers (including The New York Times), to dispel the rumor and restore public confidence. Sales of the gum soon surpassed sales of Life Savers candy, and it became the most popular bubble gum brand.{{citation |title=Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind |last1=Ries |first1=Al |last2=Trout |first2=Jack |publisher=McGraw-Hill |pages=135–136 |date=2001 |isbn=0-07-135916-8}} Nabisco bought Life Savers in 1981, and The Hershey Company acquired the Bubble Yum brand in 2000.{{Cite web|url=https://www.mashed.com/430612/the-untold-truth-of-bubble-yum-gum/|title = The Untold Truth of Bubble Yum Gum|date = 7 June 2021}}
