Career
Born in Calcutta,{{cite web|url=https://www.loc.gov/acq/ovop/delhi/salrp/buddhadebguha.html |title=Buddhadeb Guha, 1936- |website= Library of Congress|quote=One of the most popular Bengali fiction writers, Buddhadeb Guha was born on June 29, 1936, in Calcutta.}} Guha studied at St. Xavier's College of the University of Calcutta. He spent his early years in various districts of Eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh). Those days in Rangpur, Jaipurhat and Barisal are depicted in his Rivu series, some books from which are dedicated to friends from his youth.
Guha created Rijuda, an imaginary character who, with his sidekick Rudra, explores jungles mainly in Eastern India.{{cite web |url=http://www.calcuttaweb.com/js/popup.php?pic=/shop/usa/book/buddhadeb_guha.jpg&picdesc=RIJUDAR_SONGE_LABANGIBONE |title=Rijudar_Songe_Labangibone |publisher=Calcuttaweb.com |accessdate=15 July 2012 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20120222045823/http://www.calcuttaweb.com/js/popup.php?pic=%2Fshop%2Fusa%2Fbook%2Fbuddhadeb_guha.jpg&picdesc=RIJUDAR_SONGE_LABANGIBONE |archivedate=22 February 2012 }} He won the Ananda Puraskar in 1976 and was a chartered accountant by profession.{{Cite news|agency=PTI|date=30 August 2021|title=Eminent Bengali writer Buddhadeb Guha is no more|language=en-IN|work=The Hindu|url=https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/eminent-bengali-writer-buddhadeb-guha-is-no-more/article36173936.ece|access-date=30 August 2021|issn=0971-751X}}{{Cite web|date=30 August 2021|title=Noted Bengali writer Buddhadeb Guha dies in Kolkata|url=https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/kolkata-news/noted-bengali-writer-buddhadeb-guha-dies-in-kolkata-101630292502457.html|access-date=30 August 2021|website=Hindustan Times|language=en}}
Apart from writing, Guha was trained to sing by Rabindra Sangeet at the Tagore school of music, Dakshinee. He learned Hindustani classical music and old-style Tappa songs from Ramkumar Chattopadhyay and Chandidas Mal.
He was also a painter and toward the end of his life, when his eyesight began to fail and he dictated his writings, he fell back on this art.{{Cite web|url=https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/amp/story/obituary/tribute-buddhadeb-guha-the-iconic-writer-who-was-a-trained-singer-and-a-good-painter-too|title = Tribute: Buddhadeb Guha, the iconic writer who was a trained singer and good painter too|date = 31 August 2021}}
