History

The railroad formerly occupying the trail area was constructed in 1890 by the Milwaukee, Menomonee Falls, and Western Railroad, later acquired by the Milwaukee Road. It hosted passenger service, and freight service for quarries, feed mills, creameries, and a cannery. Passengers compared the route as similar to that of "a bug following a grapevine"; later, locals referred to it simply as the Bugline. Service ceased in 1978.{{Cite news |last=Wenzel |first=Mark |date=July 22, 2011 |title=The Bugline |work=Urban Milwaukee |url=https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2011/07/22/the-city-cyclist-the-bugline/ |access-date=November 18, 2023}}{{Cite news |date=October 7, 2015 |title=Newly paved Bugline Trail a great fall ride |work=Chippewa Herald |url=https://0-infoweb-newsbank-com.countycat.mcfls.org/apps/news/openurl?ctx_ver=z39.88-2004&rft_id=info%3Asid/infoweb.newsbank.com&svc_dat=WORLDNEWS&req_dat=0D8DE8DE83992E4A&rft_val_format=info%3Aofi/fmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Actx&rft_dat=document_id%3Anews%252F1612594F90A7F250 |url-access=registration |access-date=November 18, 2023 |via=NewsBank}}
