The house dates from the early 17th century, and was built by John Werden.{{cite web | url = http://www.cheshirelife.co.uk/homes-gardens/gardens/a_beautiful_walled_rose_garden_at_burton_hall_near_chester_1_2986771 | date = 11 November 2013 | title = A beautiful walled rose garden at Burton Hall near Chester | website = Cheshire Life | access-date = 8 April 2015}} There have been some small 19th-century additions. It is built in brick with buff sandstone dressings, it has a Welsh slate roof, and four stone-capped brick chimneys. Its plan is square and the house has three storeys over a basement, with a symmetrical three-bay front. The entrance is approached by ten stone steps. The garden walls and gateway are separately listed at Grade II.{{NHLE |num=1330273 |desc=Garden wall and gateway at Burton Hall |grade=II |fewer-links=yes |accessdate=14 March 2021}}
The Rowton family purchased the building, which had fallen into considerable disrepair throughout the late 20th century, in 2006 and carried out an extensive restoration programme. In 2018, they advertised a raffle in which participants could buy tickets for £5 and have the chance of winning the house.{{cite news |title=Yours for a fiver: how rural sellers are trying to shift their stately homes |url=https://www.thetimes.com/article/yours-for-a-fiver-how-rural-sellers-are-trying-to-shift-their-stately-homes-fm27grmbb |access-date=31 March 2021 |work=The Times |date=1 April 2018}}{{cite news |last1=de Lucia |first1=Carmella |title=£1.8m Cheshire mansion used in The Forsyte Saga could be yours for just FIVE pounds |url=https://www.cheshire-live.co.uk/news/chester-cheshire-news/18m-cheshire-mansion-used-forsyte-14485885 |access-date=31 March 2021 |work=Cheshire Live |date=3 April 2018}}{{cite news |last1=McMullin |first1=Kate|title=This £1.8m mansion could be yours for just FIVE POUNDS |url=https://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/property/18m-mansion-could-yours-just-14493861 |access-date=31 March 2021 |work=Liverpool Echo |date=5 April 2018}}
