BusConnects is an ongoing public transport infrastructure programme, managed by the National Transport Authority (NTA), focused on the bus networks in several cities in Ireland. Described by the NTA as intended to "improve bus services across the country",{{cite web|url=https://www.nationaltransport.ie/planning-and-investment/transport-investment/projects/busconnects/ |title=BusConnects - National Transport |publisher=National Transport Authority | website = nationaltransport.ie |date= |accessdate=2022-10-15}} as of mid-2022 the programme was in "implementation" phase in Dublin,{{cite web|url=https://busconnects.ie/initiatives/new-dublin-area-bus-network/ |title=Dublin Network Redesign | Busconnects |publisher=National Transport Authority | website = busconnects.ie |date= |accessdate=2022-10-15}} "consultation" phase in Cork,{{cite web|first=Eoin | last = English |url=https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-40960250.html |title=Contentious Cork BusConnects plan reducing people to tears, councillors claim |publisher=Irish Examiner | website = irishexaminer.com |date=2022-09-12 |accessdate=2022-10-15}} with the Minister for Transport projecting similar initiatives in Galway, Limerick and Waterford.{{cite web|url = https://www.independent.ie/news/first-journeys-under-2bn-busconnects-plan-to-begin-on-sunday-40576618.html | publisher = Independent News & Media | work = independent.ie | title = First journeys under €2bn BusConnects plan to begin on Sunday | date = 24 June 2021 | accessdate = 15 October 2022 | first = Gabija | last = Gataveckaite }} Aspects of the plans proved controversial with local politicians, residents, and unions in both Dublin and Cork.{{cite web|url = https://www.irishtimes.com/news/environment/busconnects-what-is-next-for-the-controversial-plan-1.3866158| publisher = Irish Times | website = irishtimes.com | title = BusConnects: What is next for the controversial plan? | date = 20 April 2019 | accessdate = 16 October 2022 }}{{cite web|url = https://www.independent.ie/regionals/herald/news/ross-accused-of-trying-to-duck-responsibility-for-busconnects-plan-37342714.html| publisher = Independent News & Media | work = The Herald | title = Ross accused of trying to 'duck responsibility' for BusConnects plan | date = 22 September 2018 | accessdate = 16 October 2022 }}{{cite web|url = https://www.echolive.ie/corknews/arid-40979858.html| website = echolive.ie | publisher = The Echo | title = We'll listen to residents, insists NTA as more than 2,000 submissions made on BusConnects | date = 10 October 2022 | accessdate = 16 October 2022 }}{{cite web|first1=Conor |last1 = Capplis | first2 = Eoin |last2 = English | url = https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/munster/arid-40982213.html |title=Bus union leader launches scathing attack on Cork BusConnects plan |publisher = Irish Examiner | website=irishexaminer.com |date= |accessdate=2022-10-15}}

Background

A 2017 report, commissioned by the NTA and produced by US-based consulting firm Jarrett Walker + Associates (previously involved in similar projects in New Zealand),{{cite web|first=Jessica | last = McAllen | url = https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/lessons-from-down-under-how-not-to-do-busconnects-1.3661640 |title=Lessons from down under: How not to do BusConnects |publisher=The Irish Times | website = irishtimes.com |date=2018-10-16 |accessdate=2022-10-15}} set out a number of options for the redesign of Dublin's bus transport network.{{cite web|url = https://busconnects.ie/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/dublin-area-bus-network-redesign-choices-report-17-06-05-web.pdf | publisher = National Transport Authority | website = busconnects.ie | title = Dublin Area Bus Network Redesign Choices Report | date = 6 June 2017 }} The proposed purpose of the redesign was to improve network functionality and increase bus ridership in the Dublin area. The report noted that the existing network focused on radial routes (from the suburbs into the city centre) and had very few orbital or crossing routes (from suburb to suburb).{{cite web |url=https://d1trxack2ykyus.cloudfront.net/uploads/2018/07/busconnects-dublin-network-redesign-summary.pdf|title=Dublin Area Bus Network Redesign Public Consultation Report: Summary (July 2018)|work =Jarrett Walker + Associates|date=2018-07-01|access-date=2022-06-14}} Arising from this report, an initial network proposal was released for public consultation in mid-2018.

According to a press release issued by the Department of Transport in March 2022, it was noted that, while a "final budget and delivery schedule for BusConnects Dublin" had not been established, the proposed budget was then projected to be €4 billion and work speculated to "be substantially complete by 2030".{{cite web|url =
