On 8 November 2022, the Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled that Castillo was indeed born in Tumaco on 25 June 1995, but since the nationality of a player is defined by national law, Ecuador recognizes him as an Ecuadorian national. Furthermore, the Court upheld the FIFA's policy regarding international eligibility as Castillo never played for the Colombia national team in a competitive match, he was deemed eligible to play for the Ecuador national team. The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) were however, fined CHF 100,000 and handed a 3-point deduction in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for CONMEBOL due to the use of a document which contained false information.{{cite web|url=https://www.tas-cas.org/fileadmin/user_upload/CAS_Media_Release_9175_9176_Decision.pdf |title=The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirms the eligibility of the player Byron Castillo (Ecuador) but imposes sanctions against the Ecudorian Football Federation for violation of the FIFA regulations|website=Court of Arbitration for Sport|date=8 November 2022|access-date=9 November 2022}}{{Cite web |last=Mundi |first=Jus |title=FPF v.
