As one of the founders of Artists for a New South Africa, Pounder has energized awareness of post-apartheid and HIV/AIDS issues.{{cite web|url=http://www.ansafrica.org |title=ANSA |publisher=Ansaafrica.org |access-date=October 30, 2014 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141216184526/http://ansafrica.org/ |archive-date=December 16, 2014 }} In an interview, she said about the pandemic: "When it's this massive disease, and it's affecting things in 5,000 different ways, it requires great strength and power - and there is power in numbers. So we need to involve as many people as we can, like we do with ANSA. I call it my little engine that could. It is a remarkable, tiny organization with a huge outreach. We use actors and artists with the biggest voices so they can use every opportunity to talk about AIDS."{{cite web|url=http://www.aumag.org/coverstory/January06cover.html|title=A&U:America's AIDS Magazine|publisher=Aumag.org|access-date=October 30, 2014|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130725020459/http://www.aumag.org/coverstory/January06cover.html|archive-date=July 25, 2013}}
