Functions
In the literature, CEACAM5 is often used as a synonym for cancer embryonic antigen (CEA), a well-known biomarker of many types of malignancies, such as colorectal cancer and non-small-cell lung cancer.{{cite journal | vauthors = Beauchemin N, Arabzadeh A | title = Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules (CEACAMs) in cancer progression and metastasis | journal = Cancer and Metastasis Reviews | volume = 32 | issue = 3–4 | pages = 643–671 | date = December 2013 | pmid = 23903773 | doi = 10.1007/s10555-013-9444-6 | s2cid = 10344352 }}{{cite journal | vauthors = Zhang X, Han X, Zuo P, Zhang X, Xu H | title = CEACAM5 stimulates the progression of non-small-cell lung cancer by promoting cell proliferation and migration | journal = The Journal of International Medical Research | volume = 48 | issue = 9 | pages = 300060520959478 | date = September 2020 | pmid = 32993395 | pmc = 7536504 | doi = 10.1177/0300060520959478 }} Its primary function in the embryonic intestine and colon tumors is adhesion between epithelial cells.{{cite journal | vauthors = Benchimol S, Fuks A, Jothy S, Beauchemin N, Shirota K, Stanners CP | title = Carcinoembryonic antigen, a human tumor marker, functions as an intercellular adhesion molecule | journal = Cell | volume = 57 | issue = 2 | pages = 327–334 | date = April 1989 | pmid = 2702691 | doi = 10.1016/0092-8674(89)90970-7 | s2cid = 30740594 }} Also, it plays a significant role in the inhibition of differentiation {{cite journal | vauthors = Ilantzis C, DeMarte L, Screaton RA, Stanners CP | title = Deregulated expression of the human tumor marker CEA and CEA family member CEACAM6 disrupts tissue architecture and blocks colonocyte differentiation | journal = Neoplasia | volume = 4 | issue = 2 | pages = 151–163 | date = 2002 | pmid = 11896570 | pmc = 1550325 | doi = 10.1038/sj.neo.7900201 }} and apoptosis {{cite journal | vauthors = Ordoñez C, Screaton RA, Ilantzis C, Stanners CP | title = Human carcinoembryonic antigen functions as a general inhibitor of anoikis | journal = Cancer Research | volume = 60 | issue = 13 | pages = 3419–3424 | date = July 2000 | pmid = 10910050 | url = https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/10910050 }} in colon cells.
