History

The CRC Press was founded as the Chemical Rubber Company (CRC) in 1903 by brothers Arthur, Leo and Emanuel Friedman in Cleveland, Ohio, based on an earlier enterprise by Arthur, who had begun selling rubber laboratory aprons in 1900.{{Cite encyclopedia|title = Crc Press, Inc. |encyclopedia=Encyclopedia of Cleveland History |url = http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=CPI1|publisher =Case Western Reserve University|access-date = 2015-11-11}}{{Cite web|title = CRC Press-Taylor & Francis Group |url = http://engineeringeducationsuppliersguide.com/Listing/Company/Reference_Materials__Resources/Conference_Proceedings/11564 |publisher = Engineering Education Suppliers Guide |access-date = 2015-11-11}} The company gradually expanded to include sales of laboratory equipment to chemists. In 1913 the CRC offered a short (116-page) manual called the Rubber Handbook as an incentive for any purchase of a dozen aprons. Since then the Rubber Handbook has evolved into the CRC's flagship book, the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. Another one of CRC's highly successful reference handbooks, CRC Standard Mathematical Tables, has sold over 2 million copies.{{cite web |last=Zwillinger |first=Daniel |title=Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae |website= mathtable.com |url=http://www.mathtable.com/smtf/ |access-date=2024-08-09}}

In 1964, Chemical Rubber decided to focus on its publishing ventures, and in 1973 the company changed its name to CRC Press, Inc, and exited the manufacturing business, spinning off that line as the Lab Apparatus Company.{{cite web |url-status=dead |url=http://www.crcpress.com/corphistory.asp |title=CRC Press Pioneers in Publishing |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090125113430/http://crcpress.com/corphistory.asp |archive-date=2009-01-25 |access-date=5 April 2009 |website=CRC Press Online }}
