It has been digital-only since 2006, when it became one of the first major college newspapers to drop its print edition.{{Cite web |url=http://www.colorado.edu/insidecu/editions/2007/3-13/story3.html/ |title="The Campus Press in cyberspace," Inside CU, March 13, 2007 |access-date=August 12, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150319061025/http://www.colorado.edu/insidecu/editions/2007/3-13/story3.html |archive-date=March 19, 2015 |url-status=dead }}
History
The paper was founded in 1978 as the Working Press but soon adopted the name Campus Press. It was launched by Mal Deans, a CU journalism instructor, to serve as a student-run newspaper after the Colorado Daily left campus and became a community newspaper.[http://www.sphsaa.org/class_profile.cfm?member_id=1354436/ "Mal Deans was a 'journalist's journalist,'" The Daily Camera, December 30, 2005]
The Campus Press became an online-only publication in August 2006, years ahead of most college newspapers. The tagline on the website was changed from "CU's only independent student voice" to "CU's only student voice."
The publication's name was changed to the CU Independent in August 2008 after it split from the journalism school's curriculum in the wake of a controversy over a student journalist's racially charged column.[http://www.dailycamera.com/ci_13102638/ "Campus Press no more, CU Independent takes off," The Daily Camera, August 16, 2008]
In December 2019, the university's media college, which had been providing space and retaining staff pay, announced it will defund the CU Independent in favor of a faculty-led media enterprise. Staff of the CU Independent said they would continue to maintain the website and publish content under a new funding model separate from the college.{{Cite web |last=Hernandez |first=Elizabeth |date=December 9, 2019 |title=University of Colorado to stop funding student-run CU Independent and launch a more faculty-led news outlet |url=https://www.denverpost.com/2019/12/09/cu-independent-university-colorado-student-mediaommunication-and-information/ |access-date=June 5, 2025 |website=The Denver Post}}
