Life

Barbosa was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1928, she joined the National Institute of Music in Rio de Janeiro, where she studied with Antônio Francisco Braga, Paulino Chaves, harmony with Oscar Lorenzo Fernandez and theory with Lima Coutinho.{{cite book |title=Latin American classical composers: a biographical dictionary|first1=Miguel|last1=Ficher|first2=Martha Furman|last2=Schleifer|first3=John M.|last3=Furman|date=1998}} After completing her education, Barbosa worked as a pianist playing waltzes and chorinhos to dance groups and compose pieces for them. Barbosa worked with Heitor Villa-Lobos from 1930,{{cite web|url=http://jbonline.terra.com.br/jb/papel/colunas/peltier/2004/05/14/jorcolpel20040514001.html|title=Viva a maestrina|publisher=Jornal do Brasil|accessdate=4 February 2010}} {{Dead link|date=October 2010|bot=H3llBot}} {{in lang|pt}} and served as director of the Instituto Villa-Lobos. She became a professor{{cite book |title=Enciclopédia da música brasileira: popular, erudita e folclórica|date=1998}} for chamber ensemble of the National School of Music at the University of Brazil and professor of counterpoint and fugue at the Popular School of Music Education. She also directed a number of orchestras and choir ensembles.

Works

Barbosa composed a number of works, many with a strong Brazilian theme.
