Calgary Roller Derby was originally formed as the Sandstone City Roller Girls in 2006, and restructured as the Calgary Roller Derby Association the following year. The league is skater-owned and skater-operated and is a non-profit organization.{{cite news|last1=Jamieson|first1=Nikki|title='Empowered' women kick off eighth roller derby season in Calgary|url=https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/all-woman-roller-derby-rolls-into-eighth-season-in-calgary|access-date=4 July 2015|publisher=Calgary Herald|date=18 April 2015}} In April 2018 the league announced a rebrand and dropped the "Association" from its name, and introduced an updated logo.{{cite web |date=11 April 2018 |title=Welcome to the new Calgary Roller Derby |url=http://newjam.calgaryrollerderby.com/welcome-to-the-new-calgary-roller-derby/ |access-date=12 April 2018 |website=Calgary Roller Derby}}
Currently, there are three home teams within the league: The Cut-Throat Car Hops, the Thrashin' Lassies, the B-52 Bellas. There are two travel teams: the Jane Deere (B team) and the All Stars (WFTDA charter travel team). The Hellion Rebellion were renamed the All Stars in 2012. The Jane Deere was defunct as of summer 2009 and reformed in 2016. Each of these teams has a roster of 14-20 skaters. There is also a Fresh Meat team of new skaters.
The league skates from April until September, at Triwood Arena, with charity and invitational scrimmages during the off-season. Skaters also frequently travel throughout the province to participate in invitational bouts.
The league was accepted into the WFTDA Apprentice Program in January 2013."[http://wftda.org/news/january-2013-apprentice-leagues WFTDA Accepts 16 Apprentice Members]", WFTDA, 31 January 2013{{cite news|last1=Frey|first1=Rachael|title=Calgary Roller Derby Association seeks tougher competition and higher skill|url=http://www.calgaryjournal.ca/index.php/sports/1559-calgary-roller-derby-association-seeks-tougher-competition-and-higher-skill|access-date=4 July 2015|publisher=Calgary Journal|date=6 March 2013}} CRD achieved full member status in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) in December 2013,{{cite web|title=WFTDA Welcomes 22 New Full Member Leagues|url=https://wftda.org/news/wftda-welcomes-22-new-full-member-leagues-december-2013|publisher=WFTDA|access-date=4 July 2015|date=22 December 2013}} becoming the first full WFTDA member league in Alberta.{{cite news|title=STAHR ready for big leagues|url=http://www.stalbertleader.com/2014/09/04/stahr-ready-for-big-leagues/|access-date=4 July 2015|publisher=St. Albert Leader|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150713164251/http://www.stalbertleader.com/2014/09/04/stahr-ready-for-big-leagues/|archive-date=2015-07-13|url-status=dead}}
