History

The complex was first opened in August 2018 with support from the State of Colorado, the town of Palisade, and others. The land the complex occupies formerly housed a coal mine and a coal-fired power plant, both of which were decommissioned early in the 21st century.{{cite web |url=https://cameosec.org/ |title=Cameo Shooting and Education Complex |author= |date=2023 |website=Cameo Shooting and Education Complex |publisher= |access-date=September 15, 2023 |quote= |archive-date=October 24, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231024011505/https://cameosec.org/ |url-status=live }}{{cite web |url=https://cameosec.org/history/ |title=History |author= |date=2023 |website=Cameo Shooting and Education Complex |publisher= |access-date=September 15, 2023 |quote= |archive-date=October 24, 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231024011505/https://cameosec.org/history/ |url-status=live }}

The complex takes its name from the extinct town of Cameo, Colorado which was located at the site.{{cite gnis |id=174435 |name=Cameo |date=October 13, 1978|access-date=September 15, 2023}}
