Inspired by Cameron's work with sick children when he was a television actor, Camp Firefly began around 1990 and focuses on also helping accompanying family members. Six or seven families attend each year's retreat, and as of 2012, over 100 families had attended, according to an interview with Cameron by Indiana Wesleyan University.{{cite magazine |url=https://www.indwes.edu/alumni/alumni-service-and-benefits/Triangle-Archive/Spring2012Triangle.pdf#page=5 |title=To Know Who I Am and Whose I Am |date=Spring 2012 |magazine=Triangle |publisher=Indiana Wesleyan University |access-date=August 4, 2019 |page=5 }} Theme nights during the camp week have included activities such as luaus, barn dancing, and safaris.{{cite news |url=https://www.lakeoconeebreeze.net/news/the-arts-barn-spreads-love-to-community/article_c86f692e-797c-11e8-82ed-ffb49fd315e9.html |title=The Arts Barn spreads love to community |date=June 26, 2018 |website=Lake Oconee Breeze |first=Madison |last=Loew |access-date=August 4, 2019 }}

The camp received a donation from Sherwood Baptist Church, in whose major 2008 film, Fireproof, Cameron had starred without payment.{{cite web |url=https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=5941016&page=1&singlePage=true |title='Fireproof' shows Christian movies sell |date=October 3, 2008 |work=ABC News |access-date=May 5, 2015 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304210818/https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=5941016&page=1&singlePage=true |archive-date=March 4, 2016 |first=Luchina |last=Fisher }}
