Canada competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. Since the nation's debut in 1900, Canadian athletes had appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games, with the exception of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow because of the country's support for the United States-led boycott. The chef de mission was Curt Harnett, appointed in April 2016 after Jean-Luc Brassard, the original chef de mission, resigned his position.{{cite news|url=http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/harnett-chef-ready-olympics-1.3533757|title=Curt Harnett 'natural' fit to step in as last-minute chef de mission|last=Heroux|first=David|date=13 April 2016|publisher=Canadian Broadcasting Corporation|access-date=27 May 2016|archive-date=24 June 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160624023448/http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/harnett-chef-ready-olympics-1.3533757|url-status=live}}{{cite news|url=http://news.nationalpost.com/sports/rio-2016/jean-luc-brassard-says-he-resigned-as-olympic-chef-de-mission-after-he-spent-a-lot-of-energy-challenging-coc-over-marcel-aubut-allegations|title=Jean-Luc Brassard says he resigned as Olympic chef de mission after he 'spent a lot of energy' challenging COC over Marcel Aubut allegations|last=Hall|first=Vicki|date=13 April 2016|work=National Post|publisher=Postmedia Network|access-date=9 August 2016}}

A total of eight Canadian track cyclists qualified. Following the completion of the 2016 UCI Track Cycling World Championships, Canadian riders accumulated spots in the women's team sprint and team pursuit, as well as the women's omnium. As a result of their place in the women's team sprint, Canada won the right to enter two riders in both women's sprint and women's keirin. Therefore, Canada were permitted to enter the maximum team size of 7 women. Although Canada failed to win a quota place in the men's team sprint, they managed to secure a single berth in the men's keirin, with their final individual UCI Olympic ranking in that event.{{cite news|title=Athletes' quotas for Track Cycling events at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games|url=http://www.uci.ch/pressreleases/athletes-quotas-for-track-cycling-events-the-rio-206-olympic-games/|publisher=Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI)|date=14 March 2016|access-date=16 July 2016|archive-date=19 July 2016|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160719055432/http://www.uci.ch/pressreleases/athletes-quotas-for-track-cycling-events-the-rio-206-olympic-games/|url-status=live}}
