Canal N a Peruvian pay television news channel news channel. It was founded as a joint venture between El Comercio and Telefónica. The channel is exclusively available through Movistar TV.

Although CCN and Cable Mágico Noticias were the first Peruvian news channels, Canal N established itself as the only permanent media outlet with local and national coverage in the 2000s, until the arrival of other competitors such as ATV+ and RPP TV.{{Cite web|url=https://gestion.pe/impresa/mayor-competencia-informativa-televidentes-anunciantes-13940-noticia/|title=Mayor competencia informativa para televidentes y anunciantes|access-date=24 May 2023|date=22 June 2012|website=Gestión|language=es}}

History

The concept of Canal N was conceived in 1997 by journalist Bernardo Roca Rey during the Japanese embassy hostage crisis in Lima. To bring this concept to fruition, a commercial partner was required. Over time, Gilberto Hume emerged as the suitable partner, whom Rey encountered at a beach.{{Cite web|url=https://canaln.pe/actualidad/canal-n-15-anos-bernardo-roca-rey-y-gilberto-hume-arquitectos-medio-n144103|title=Canal N 15 años: Bernardo Roca Rey y Gilberto Hume, los arquitectos del medio|access-date=7 August 2022|website=canaln.pe|date=5 July 2014 |language=es}}

"A whole afternoon making ceviche in a jar with plenty of pisco, and then we continued thinking about it and the idea matured," said Hume. El Comercio started advertising Canal N to the public for the first time in 1998 in PC World magazine, an American magazine whose local version was produced by the newspaper. Later, advertisements for the channel appeared on Cable Mágico's magazine for the subscribers of the cable operator. The advertisement included a photo of the studios of the channel and the phrase El Perú minuto a minuto. After several months of technical and labor adjustments, Canal N was launched in test mode on Canal Mágico in April 1999, initially available only to subscribers of the adult channel package.{{Cite book|title=En vivo y en directo : una historia de la televisión peruana|url=http://worldcat.org/oclc/1250648431|access-date=1 April 2022|isbn=978-9972-45-424-0|oclc=1250648431|first=Vivas Sabroso|last=Fernando|date=8 July 2018 |pages=656–659|publisher=Universidad de Lima }}

At the same time, on Cable Mágico's channel 8, which was previously occupied by the struggling Brazilian network Rede Manchete in its final weeks before closure, Canal N's logo appeared. The logo featured a rotating 3D letter N on a black background accompanied by background music, signaling the channel's upcoming availability on that frequency. Canal N was officially launched at 8 am on 4 July 1999.{{Cite book|title=Chichapolitik: la prensa con Fujimori en las elecciones generales 2000 en el Perú|url=http://worldcat.org/oclc/915671886|publisher=Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung|date=2015|access-date=21 November 2022|isbn=978-9972-43-041-1|oclc=915671886|first=Jacqueline|last=Fowks|page=99}}{{Cite web|url=http://elcomercio.pe/impresa/notas/canal-repaso-su-historia/20090704/309304|title=Canal N, un repaso por su historia|access-date=2 March 2023|date=4 July 2009|website=El Comercio Perú|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20091015140233/http://elcomercio.pe/impresa/notas/canal-repaso-su-historia/20090704/309304|archive-date=15 October 2009}}
