CandyBar is an unsupported OS X application by Panic and The Iconfactory. Although macOS allows users to change icons for user-level files and folders, this is not possible for system files.{{cite magazine |last=Williams |first=Johnathon |date=November 2005|title= Extreme Mac Makeover, Makeover Essential, Sweeter System Icons|magazine=MacAddict|publisher=Future Network USA|issn=1088-548X|issue=111|pages=24}} The application replaces system icons with icons/docks of the user's choice{{cite book |last=Sadun |first=Erica |date=2004 |title=Modding Mac OS X Extreme Makeovers For Your Mac |publisher=O'Reilly Media, Inc. |pages=[https://archive.org/details/moddingmacosxext00sadu/page/20 20-22] |isbn=9780596007096 |chapter=Chapter 1, Transforming Your Mac |chapter-url-access=registration |chapter-url=https://archive.org/details/moddingmacosxext00sadu/page/20 }} and supports cataloging of icons. Panic has announced in August 2012 that the application would no longer be supported, and offered it as a free download instead. Further commercial development of CandyBar was hindered by changes in the macOS, it was harder to replace icons with every new version and new icons could cause problems with update of several Mac App Store applications. The final release of CandyBar runs on OS X Mountain Lion.{{cite news |last=Schwan |first=Ben |date=7 August 2012 |title=Icon-Tool CandyBar künftig kostenlos |url=https://www.heise.de/mac-and-i/meldung/Icon-Tool-CandyBar-kuenftig-kostenlos-1661326.html |newspaper=Mac & i |language=de|access-date=16 February 2017 }}{{Cite web |last=Henry |first=Alan |date=2012-08-06 |title=Mac Tweaking Tool CandyBar Is Now Free, Updated for Mountain Lion |url=https://lifehacker.com/mac-tweaking-tool-candybar-is-now-free-updated-for-mou-5932073 |access-date=2023-05-26 |website=Lifehacker |language=en}} The company also had provided a serial number on its website.{{cite web |url=http://www.panic.com/blog/candybar-mountain-lion-and-beyond |title=CandyBar, Mountain Lion, and Beyond |date=3 August 2012 |access-date=16 February 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131230121023/http://www.panic.com/blog/candybar-mountain-lion-and-beyond |archive-date=30 December 2013 |url-status=dead }} The application was fully handed over to The Iconfactory,{{Cite web |last=Caolo |first=Dave |date=August 6, 2012 |title=Panic's Candy Bar is now free, goes to Iconfactory |url=https://www.engadget.com/2012-08-06-panicss-candy-bar-is-now-free-goes-to-iconfactory.html |access-date=2023-05-26 |website=Engadget |language=en-US}} which released a 2022 update removing the ability to modify system icons, but retaining the icon organization features.{{Cite web |last=Bazoge |first=Mickaël |date=2022-06-14 |title=CandyBar revient, mais uniquement pour gérer les collections d'icônes |url=https://www.macg.co/logiciels/2022/06/candybar-revient-mais-uniquement-pour-gerer-les-collections-dicones-129627 |access-date=2023-05-26 |website=MacGeneration |language=fr}}
