Cape Colville is the northernmost point of the Coromandel Peninsula in New Zealand's North Island.{{LINZ|38787||2010-03-25}} It lies 85 kilometres north of Thames, and 70 kilometres northeast of the city of Auckland, on the other side of the Hauraki Gulf. The small settlements of Port Jackson and Fletcher Bay lie immediately to the west and east respectively of the cape.
Great Barrier Island lies to the north of Cape Colville, separated from it by 20-kilometre width of the Colville Channel. The tiny Channel Island lies between the two.
Port Jackson
Port Jackson Bay, just to the south of the Cape, has been inhabited since at least the fifteenth century.{{Cite web|url=https://www.heritage.org.nz/the-list/details/6201|title=Search the List {{!}} Midden/ Artefacts, Port Jackson|last=|first=|date=|website=www.heritage.org.nz|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191221065655/https://www.heritage.org.nz/the-list/details/6201 |archive-date=21 December 2019 |access-date=2020-02-19}} At the south end of the Bay, at Port Jackson, a water-powered flax mill existed in 1901,{{Cite web|url=https://kura.aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/digital/collection/photos/id/132807|title=Flax Mill in Port Jackson in 1901|last=|first=|date=|website=Kura Heritage Collections Online (Auckland Council Libraries)|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2025-04-17}} when the population was just 12.{{Cite web|url=https://www3.stats.govt.nz/historic_publications/1901-census/1901-results-census/1901-results-census.html|title=1901 census results|last=|first=|date=|website=StatsNZ|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131216091833/http://www3.stats.govt.nz/historic_publications/1901-census/1901-results-census/1901-results-census.html |archive-date=16 December 2013 |access-date=}} There is a camp site.{{Cite web|url=https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/coromandel/places/northern-coromandel/things-to-do/port-jackson-campsite/|title=Port Jackson Campsite|website=Department of Conservation|language=en-nz|access-date=2020-02-19}} New Zealand dotterel (Anarhynchus obscurus), a species of plover, breed locally.{{Cite web|url=https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/WRC-2019/TR201353.pdf|title=Sites of importance to coastal and estuarine birds on the east coast of the Waikato region|last=|first=|date=November 2013|website=www.waikatoregion.govt.nz|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200220110442/https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/WRC-2019/TR201353.pdf |archive-date=20 February 2020 |access-date=2020-02-19}} Boneseed is a local weed.{{Cite web|url=https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/WRC-2019/RPMP-annual-report.pdf|title=Waikato Regional Pest Management Plan Annual report 2018/19|last=|first=|date=|website=www.waikatoregion.govt.nz|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200220110445/https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/WRC-2019/RPMP-annual-report.pdf |archive-date=20 February 2020 |access-date=2020-02-19}} Dune restoration with spinifex was done from 2009 to 2011.{{Cite web|url=https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/Services/regional-services/Beachcare/beachcare-2012.pdf|title=Beachcare groups|last=|first=|date=2011|website=www.waikatoregion.govt.nz|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180203093916/https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/WRC/Services/regional-services/Beachcare/beachcare-2012.pdf |archive-date=3 February 2018 |access-date=2020-02-19}} There was much flooding in 2014.{{Cite web|url=https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/PageFiles/Templates/Agenda-Package-for-Coromandel-Liaison-Zone-Subcommittee-meeting-21-August-2014.pdf|title=COROMANDEL LIAISON ZONE SUBCOMMITTEE|last=|first=|date=21 August 2014|website=www.waikatoregion.govt.nz|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200220111637/https://www.waikatoregion.govt.nz/assets/PageFiles/Templates/Agenda-Package-for-Coromandel-Liaison-Zone-Subcommittee-meeting-21-August-2014.pdf |archive-date=20 February 2020 |access-date=2020-02-20}} Killer whales (orca) inhabit the waters offshore, where they specialise in hunting eagle rays.{{Cite web |last=Bates |first=Mick |date=28 December 2022 |title=Orca Hunt New Zealand |url=https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-C7yYxiUwxg |website=YouTube}}
