Caprine alphaherpesvirus 1 (CpHV-1) is a species of virus known to infect goats worldwide. It has been shown to produce systemic and respiratory symptoms in kids and to cause abortions in adult goats.{{Cite journal|last1=Martins|first1=Bruno|last2=Ebling|first2=Rafael C.|last3=Martins|first3=Mathias|last4=Diel|first4=Diego G.|last5=Weiblen|first5=Rudi|last6=Flores|first6=Eduardo F.|date=2019-11-01|title=Antigenic relationships between Caprine alphaherpesvirus 1 (CpHV-1) and Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1) and experimental CpHV-1 infection of kids and calves|journal=Microbial Pathogenesis|language=en|volume=136|pages=103663|doi=10.1016/j.micpath.2019.103663|pmid=31404631 |doi-access=free}}
The virus is in the genus Varicellovirus, subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae, family Herpesviridae, and order Herpesvirales.{{Cite web|url=https://ictv.global/sites/default/files/MSL/ICTV_Master_Species_List_2018b.v2.xlsx |title=ICTV Master Species List MSL34.v2 |year=2018 |website=International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV)|access-date=15 September 2024 }}{{cite web|url=https://ictv.global/taxonomy/taxondetails?taxnode_id=202301444&taxon_name=Varicellovirus%20caprinealpha1|title=History of the taxon: Species: Varicellovirus caprinealpha1 (2023 Release, MSL #39)|author=|date=|website=ictv.global|publisher=International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses|access-date=29 January 2025|quote=}}
It is less studied than some of the other ruminant viruses in the genus Varicellovirus including Bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), and research conflicts about its level of species specificity and its ability to cause bovine infection and illness.{{Citation|last1=Hay|first1=John|title=Alphaherpesvirus DNA replication|date=2007|url=http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK47379/|work=Human Herpesviruses: Biology, Therapy, and Immunoprophylaxis|editor-last=Arvin|editor-first=Ann|publisher=Cambridge University Press|isbn=978-0-521-82714-0|pmid=21348073|access-date=2020-06-09|last2=Ruyechan|first2=William T.|editor2-last=Campadelli-Fiume|editor2-first=Gabriella|editor3-last=Mocarski|editor3-first=Edward|editor4-last=Moore|editor4-first=Patrick S.}}{{Cite journal|last1=Azab|first1=Walid|last2=Dayaram|first2=Anisha|last3=Greenwood|first3=Alex D.|last4=Osterrieder|first4=Nikolaus|date=2018-09-28|title=How Host Specific Are Herpesviruses?
