Carex brunnea, the greater brown sedge, is a small species of flowering plant found in many parts of Asia, as well as eastern Australia and Lord Howe Island.{{cite web |title=Carex brunnea|work=Efloras- Flora of Pakistan|author=|accessdate= 13 December 2018|url=http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=200026539}} This plant is often seen in disturbed, sunny areas in and near rainforest. This is one of many plants described by Robert Brown and was published in his Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van Diemen (1810). Brown recorded the type "(J.) v.v."{{cite web |title=Cyperaceae Juss.
