History

Carlatton was an ancient parish in the historic county of Cumberland. It had a church as late as the 14th century, which stood near Carlatton Mill on the Cairn Beck. No trace of the church now remains, and Carlatton came to be considered an extra-parochial township.{{cite book |title=Kelly's Directory of Cumberland |date=1906 |page=57 |url=https://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digital/collection/p16445coll4/id/45993/rec/2 |access-date=21 April 2025}}{{cite web |title=Cumberland Sheet XXV |url=https://maps.nls.uk/view/102340764 |website=National Library of Scotland |publisher=Ordnance Survey |access-date=21 April 2025 |date=1868}} In 1858, such extra-parochial townships were converted into civil parishes.{{cite web |title=Carlatton Ancient Parish / Civil Parish |url=https://visionofbritain.org.uk/unit/10011115 |website=A Vision of Britain through Time |publisher=GB Historical GIS / University of Portsmouth |access-date=21 April 2025}}
