Casto Espinosa Barriga (born 18 June 1982), known simply as Casto, is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper.
Club career
Born in Pueblonuevo del Guadiana, Province of Badajoz, Extremadura, Casto spent four years at local Mérida UD (formative years included), making seven league appearances for the seniors in the Segunda División B. In 2003, he moved to CD Logroñés where he played one season before joining Albacete Balompié of Segunda División, featuring in one match for the first team in 2005–06.{{cite news|url=http://hemeroteca.mundodeportivo.com/preview/2006/06/18/pagina-44/824693/pdf.html#&mode=fullScreen|title=Insípido reparto de puntos en Tenerife|trans-title=They share the points in Tenerife yawning|newspaper=Mundo Deportivo|first=Álvaro|last=Castañeda|language=es|date=18 June 2006|access-date=18 February 2022}}{{cite news|url=https://www.hoy.es/deportes/futbol/primera-rfef/conseguido-muchisimo-pensaba-20220217223717-nt.html|title="He conseguido muchísimo más de lo que pensaba que podía lograr"|trans-title="I've achieved so much more than what I thought I could"|newspaper=Hoy|first=Raúl|last=Peña|language=es|date=17 February 2022|access-date=18 February 2022}}
Casto signed with Real Betis in the summer of 2006, where he initially began as third-choice behind Pedro Contreras and Toni Doblas. With the arrival of Portuguese international Ricardo in the following campaign, it seemed as though he would be provided with little opportunity to shine, even with Contreras' departure. However, after a serious injury to Doblas, he was called up from the reserves; after Ricardo also went down with a minor ailment, he made his debut in La Liga on 16 December 2007, in a 3–1 home win against UD Almería.{{cite web|url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226488&cc=5739|title=Real Betis 3–1 Almeria|publisher=ESPN Soccernet|date=16 December 2007|access-date=27 February 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121026093258/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226488|archive-date=26 October 2012}}
In March/April 2008 Casto, who eventually overtook Ricardo as starter after the latter's recovery, featured in Betis' first three back-to-back victories in over two years, with wins over CA Osasuna, FC Barcelona and Real Zaragoza. In his first five games his team won four, with the player keeping clean sheets in three.{{cite web|url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226451&cc=5739|title=Valladolid 0–0 Real Betis|publisher=ESPN Soccernet|date=23 December 2007|access-date=27 February 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080117204225/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226451&cc=5739|archive-date=17 January 2008}}{{cite web|url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226478&cc=5739|title=Osasuna 0–1 Real Betis|publisher=ESPN Soccernet|date=23 March 2008|access-date=27 February 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080329173925/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226478&cc=5739|archive-date=29 March 2008}}{{cite web|url=http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226438&cc=5739|title=Real Zaragoza 0–3 Real Betis|publisher=ESPN Soccernet|date=6 April 2008|access-date=27 February 2012|url-status=dead|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080409133231/http://soccernet.espn.go.com/report?id=226438&cc=5739|archive-date=9 April 2008}}
As coach Paco Chaparro stayed on the bench for 2008–09, Casto won the battle for first-choice over Ricardo, being the undisputed starter during the early stages, a situation which would revert midway through the season.{{cite news|url=http://futbol.as.com/futbol/2009/01/09/mas_futbol/1231486037_850215.html|title=Ricardo vuelve a ser el portero titular del Betis|trans-title=Ricardo is Betis' starting goalkeeper again|newspaper=Diario AS|first=Tito|last=González|language=es|date=9 January 2009|access-date=20 March 2017}} He started often after Ricardo's departure to Leicester City, only being overtaken by Adrián in 2012–13.{{cite web|url=http://sevilla.eldesmarque.com/real-betis/53427-casto-de-despide-del-betis-bajo-los-palos|title=Casto se despide del Betis bajo los palos|trans-title=Casto bids Betis farewell behind the sticks|publisher=El Desmarque|first=Álvaro|last=Ramírez|language=es|date=30 May 2013|access-date=1 July 2015}}
