History

File:Homes destroyed by Typhoon Bopha in Cateel, Davao Oriental.jpg

Cateel is the first municipality in Mindanao. It was the place where Spaniards first docked in Mindanao which reflects how majority of its primary inhabitants converted to Catholicism.

In 1959, Mainit and Alegria were converted into barrios.{{cite web|url=http://lawph.com/statutes/ra2105.html|title=R.A. No. 2105, An Act Creating Certain Barrios in the Municipality of Cateel, Province of Davao|publisher=LawPH.com|accessdate=April 13, 2011}}

The municipality was one of the hardest-hit towns of Typhoon Bopha when it crossed the town on December 3, 2012.{{cite news|title=Typhoon death toll climbs to over 200|url=http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/318893/typhoon-death-toll-climbs-to-over-200|newspaper=Philippine Daily Inquirer|accessdate=December 5, 2012}}
