Catherine Mary Reid is a New Zealand paleontologist, and is a full professor at the University of Canterbury, specialising in palaeogeography of waterways and the evolution and ecology of bryozoans.

Academic career

Reid earned a Master in Science at the University of Auckland in 1996,{{Cite thesis|title=The paleontology, paleoecology and stratigraphy of Lower Miocene sediments in the Waipatiki/Mangatuna area, Wairarapa, New Zealand |type=MSc thesis|last=Reid|first=Catherine M.|date=1996|publisher=University of Auckland|url=https://auckland.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/64UAUCK_INST/13vfdcn/alma9961073214002091}} where she was awarded a Hastie Scholarship by the Geoscience Society of New Zealand.{{Cite web |title=SJ Hastie Scholarships » Geoscience Society of New Zealand |url=https://gsnz.org.nz/awards-and-recognition/past-award-recipients/sj-hastie-scholarships/ |access-date=2024-02-02 |website=Geoscience Society of New Zealand |language=en-US}} Reid then completed a PhD at the University of Tasmania on aquatic invertebrates called bryozoans in Tasmania, New South Wales and Southern Thailand, supervised by Clive Burrett and Pat Quilty.{{Cite thesis |title=The Permian bryozoa of Tasmania, New South Wales and southern Thailand: their taxonomy, biostratigraphy, palaeoecology and biogeography |last=Reid |first=Catherine Mary |type=PhD thesis |publisher=University of Tasmania |url=https://doi.org/10.25959/23244794.v1 |date=2001 |doi=10.25959/23244794.v1}} Reid joined the faculty of the University of Canterbury, rising to full professor in the School of Earth and Environment in 2024.{{Cite web |date=2023-12-01 |title=UC appoints 14 new professors {{!}} University of Canterbury |url=https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/news-and-events/news/uc-appoints-14-new-professors- |access-date=2024-02-02 |website=www.canterbury.ac.nz |language=en}}

Reid is interested in the ecology and evolution of bryozoans, and how changes in ocean chemistry impact on them, and has researched these internationally. In New Zealand, she investigates the geological history of waterways and estuaries, using sedimentology and microfossils to investigate the human impacts on these areas. She is a member of the Waterways Centre, a joint research initiative between Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury to improve freshwater management.{{Cite web |title=Members |url=https://www.waterways.ac.nz/members |access-date=2024-06-30 |website=University of Canterbury – Waterways |language=en-NZ}}{{Cite web |title=The Centre |url=https://www.waterways.ac.nz/the-centre |access-date=2024-06-30 |website=University of Canterbury – Waterways |language=en-NZ}}

Reid was an associate investigator on a 2021 funded Marsden grant titled Avian diversity in the aftermath of the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K/Pg) mass extinction: Zealandia as a hub for the evolution of marine birds, and led by Vanesa De Pietri at Canterbury.{{Cite web |title=GSNZ members celebrate funding success » Geoscience Society of New Zealand |url=https://gsnz.org.nz/news-and-events/newsflashes-and-other-news/gsnz-members-celebrate-funding-success/ |access-date=2024-06-30 |website=Geoscience Society of New Zealand |language=en-US}}{{Cite web |title=Marsden Fund awards 2021 |url=https://www.royalsociety.org.nz/what-we-do/funds-and-opportunities/marsden/awarded-grants/marsden-fund-awards-2021/ |access-date=2024-06-30 |website=Royal Society Te Apārangi}} Reid was part of a team investigating ancient penguin fossils, including the recently discovered Kupoupou stilwelli.{{Cite web |title=When penguins ruled after dinosaurs died |url=https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/839196 |access-date=2024-06-08 |website=EurekAlert! |language=en}}{{Cite web |last=Varghese |first=Sam |title=iTWire – Evidence of ancient penguin that looked like today's species found |url=https://itwire.com/science-news/biology/evidence-of-ancient-penguin-that-looked-like-today-s-species-found.html |access-date=2024-06-29 |website=itwire.com |language=en-gb}}

In 2014 she served as secretary on the national committee of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand.{{Cite web |title=Academic profile: Professor Catherine Reid |url=https://profiles.canterbury.ac.nz/Catherine-Reid |access-date=2024-02-02 |website=profiles.canterbury.ac.nz}}
