Cathy Maree Stinear is a New Zealand clinical neuroscientist, and is a full professor at the University of Auckland, specialising in stroke rehabilitation and techniques for prediction of stroke recovery. She was appointed Chair of the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand in 2021, and is the first woman to chair the organisation.
Academic career
Stinear did not want to go to university, and left school during her final year. She then trained as a pilot, and worked as a flying instructor. At age 23 Stinear began studying at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and entered private practice upon graduation with a BSc in Chiropractic. She simultaneously completed a BSc in Physiology at the University of Auckland. She then pursued her interests in neuroscience by enrolling in a MSc at the University of Auckland. Stinear followed this with a PhD titled Motor cortex inhibition in focal hand dystonia also at Auckland.{{Cite thesis|title= Motor cortex inhibition in focal hand dystonia|last=Stinear|first=Cathy Maree|type=PhD thesis|publisher=University of Auckland|url=https://auckland.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/64UAUCK_INST/13vfdcn/alma99120604814002091|date=2003}} Stinear then joined the faculty of the University of Auckland, rising to full professor in 2019.{{Cite web |title=Neuroscientist Cathy Stinear: professor revolutionising stroke rehabilitation – The University of Auckland |url=https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2019/10/01/cathy-stinear-stroke-rehabilitation-neuroscientist.html |access-date=2024-07-02 |website=www.auckland.ac.nz}} Stinear is Director of the Clinical Neuroscience Laboratory in the Department of Medicine, and conducts clinical research within the Auckland District Health Board’s Stroke Unit. She is also Pro-Vice Chancellor Equity at the university.{{Cite web |title=Ihonuku Tōkeke {{!}} Pro Vice-Chancellor Equity – The University of Auckland |url=https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/about-us/about-the-university/the-university/governance-and-committees/management-team/pvc-equity.html |access-date=2024-07-02 |website=www.auckland.ac.nz}}{{Cite web |date=2024-07-03 |title=Auckland Uni staff faced death threats after segregation claims |url=https://www.nzherald.co.nz/talanoa/auckland-university-students-and-staff-faced-death-threats-over-spaces-for-pasifika-and-maori/DIYYOKUCW5HB3CHXL6Q6SYHPLQ/ |access-date=2024-07-02 |website=NZ Herald |language=en-NZ}} Stinear chaired the Neurological Foundation's science advisory committee for four years, and was appointed Chair of their Council in 2021, following on from Dr Barry Snow. Stinear's postdoctoral research focused on stroke rehabilitation, and she has continued to work in this area, using neurophysiological and neuromodulation techniques to work directly with patients, and to make individualised predictions for stroke recovery.{{Cite journal |date=December 2010 |title=Cathy Stinear |url=https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laneur/article/PIIS1474-4422(10)70293-3/fulltext |journal=The Lancet |volume=9 |issue=12 |pages=1153 |doi=10.1016/S1474-4422(10)70293-3|url-access=subscription }}{{Cite journal |last=Garwood |first=Dominic |date=2022-08-09 |title=Interview: Cathy Stinear |url=https://www.emjreviews.com/neurology/article/interview-cathy-stinear-j110121/?site_version=EMJ |journal=Neurology |language=en-GB |issn=2054-4529}}{{Cite web |title=Academic profile: Professor Cathy Stinear |url=https://profiles.auckland.ac.nz/c-stinear |access-date=2024-07-02 |website=profiles.auckland.ac.nz}}
