Biography

Catriona Ward was born to English parents{{Cite web|url=https://www.bedales.org.uk/alumni/catriona-ward|title=Catriona Ward - Old Bedalian, 1998|website=Bedales School|accessdate=26 October 2024}} in Washington, D.C. Due to her father's work as an international economist, the family moved around and she grew up all over the world, including in the United States, Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, and Morocco. Dartmoor was the one place the family returned to on a regular basis.{{Cite news |last=Ward |first=Catriona |date=2021-03-17 |title=Wish I were there: the ghosts and glories of Dartmoor |work=Financial Times |url=https://www.ft.com/content/91633ece-8654-4d20-889a-8d172c440a7e |access-date=2023-11-02}}

Ward attended Bedales School and went on to study English at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Ward initially worked as an actor based in New York.

When she returned to London she worked on her first novel while writing for a human rights foundation until she left to take an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. That novel, Rawblood (distributed in the United States as The Girl from Rawblood), was published in 2015.

Now she writes novels and short stories, and reviews for various publications.{{cite web | last=Oates | first=Joyce Carol | title=For People Who Devour Books | website=Literary Review | date=2020-02-12 | url=https://literaryreview.co.uk/contributors/catriona-ward | access-date=2020-02-12}} Ward won the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel in 2016 at the British Fantasy Awards for Rawblood and again in 2018 for Little Eve, making her the first woman to win the prize twice.{{Cite web|url=https://www.britishfantasysociety.org/british-fantasy-awards/bfawinners/|title=Winners | The British Fantasy Society|website=www.britishfantasysociety.org|access-date=Jun 9, 2020|archive-date=18 November 2017|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171118223026/https://www.britishfantasysociety.org/british-fantasy-awards/bfawinners/|url-status=dead}} Little Eve also went on to win the prestigious Shirley Jackson Award for best novel.{{Cite web|url=https://locusmag.com/2019/07/2018-shirley-jackson-awards-winners/|title=2018 Shirley Jackson Awards Winners|date=Jul 15, 2019|access-date=Jun 9, 2020}} Her next gothic thriller, The Last House on Needless Street, was published through Viper Books (an imprint of Serpent's Tail) in March 2021, and Tor Nightfire (Tor Books) in the US, in September 2021.{{Cite web|url=https://www.thebookseller.com/news/catriona-ward-moves-new-serpents-tail-imprint-viper-1131301|title=Viper strikes: Catriona Ward moves to new Serpent's Tail imprint | The Bookseller|website=www.thebookseller.com|access-date=Jun 9, 2020}} Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish’s The Imaginarium Productions has optioned film rights to the book.{{Cite web|url=https://deadline.com/2021/03/andy-serkis-the-last-house-on-needless-street-catriona-ward-jonathan-cavendish-imaginarium-productions-movie-deal-1234716475/|title = The Imaginarium's Andy Serkis & Jonathan Cavendish in Film Deal for Catriona Ward Novel 'The Last House on Needless Street'|date = 17 March 2021}}
