Life and career

Plate was born in Barcelona, Spain and grew up in Cologne, Germany.{{cn|date=November 2024}} She attended to Montessori Gymnasium, Koeln, Germany{{cn|date=November 2024}} before earning her fine arts degree at the Kölner Werkschulen{{cn|date=November 2024}} and relocated to New York in 1987 through a Fulbright Scholarship for post-graduate Fine Arts studies at the School of Visual Arts.{{Cite web|url=https://museumofnonvisibleart.com/interviews/interview-with-catya-plate/|title=Catya Plate|website=museumofnonvisibleart.com|date=24 July 2012 |access-date=2019-03-20}} In 1997, she received an Artist in the Marketplace award from the Bronx Museum of the Arts{{cn|date=November 2024}} and in 2008 her work was selected for permanent inclusion in the Art Base of the Elizabeth A.
