The Causapscal River ({{IPAc-en|k|oʊ-|z|ɑː|p|s|k|æ|l}}; {{IPA|fr|kozapskal|lang}}) is a waterway of {{convert|61.0|km|mi}} located in the Matapedia Valley, in La Matapédia Regional County Municipality, in administrative regions of Bas-Saint-Laurent and Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine, in Quebec, Canada. It is a tributary to the Matapedia River; where these two meet is called {{lang|fr|Les Fourches}} stream pool.

This river of the Matapédia Valley empties into the east bank of the Matapédia River, in the city of Causapscal, at the level of "Les Fourches" salmon pool.

Geography

The Causapscal River rises in the Dunière Wildlife Sanctuary, bordering the cantons of Catalonia (township) and La Verendrye (township). This source is located in the Chic-Choc Mountains (part of the Notre Dame Mountains).

Upper courses of the river (segment of {{convert|43.6|km|mi}})

  • {{convert|0.4|km}} south in Lavérendrye (township), up to the southern boundary of the Zec Casault;
  • {{convert|5.9|km}} west up to Lévesque stream (from the southwest);
  • {{convert|3.4|km}} northwest up to the boundary of the Lagrange (township);
  • {{convert|5.2|km}} northwest in the Lagrange (township), up to Bacon Creek (from the east);
  • {{convert|10.6|km}} northwest, crossing a swamp in the end zone segment, up to the outlet of Lake North (from the north);
  • {{convert|5.5|km}} west, crossing a marsh area at the start of the segment, up to the outlet of Lake Lavoie (from the north);
  • {{convert|2.4|km}} southwest up to the confluence of the South Causapscal River (from the southeast);
  • {{convert|0.7|km}} southwest up to the limit of Casault (township);
  • {{convert|4.0|km}} west in the Casault (township), collecting the waters of Gun Creek, up to the boundary of Blais (township);
  • {{convert|5.2|km}} southwest in Blais (township), collecting the waters of Pelletier stream and the discharge of Lake Bergeron, up to Casault River, which is the discharge (from the southwest) of Lake Casault (length: {{convert|1.1|km|mi}}; height: {{convert|344|m|ft}}) and Lake Causapscal (length: {{convert|1.8|km}}; height: {{convert|344|m|ft}}). Note: These two lakes are separated by a narrow strip of land.

Lower course of the river (segment of {{convert|29.8|km|mi}})

  • {{convert|8.0|km|mi}} south, forming a detour to the west, up to the Marais Creek;
  • {{convert|1.4|km|mi}} southwest up to the limit of Casault (township);
  • {{convert|7.4|km|mi}} to the southwest in the unorganized territory of Lac-Casault (Casault (ownship)), up to the limit of Saint-Alexandre-des-Lacs;
  • {{convert|1.5|km|mi}} south in Saint-Alexandre-des-Lacs, up to the La Verendrye stream (from the east);
  • {{convert|1.9|km|mi}} southward up to the boundary of the city of Causapscal;
  • {{convert|3.0|km|mi}} south in the city of Causapscal, up to the Four Miles stream (from the east);

Fish and wildlife

The Causapscal River is famous for salmon sport fishing by wading and/or by canoe. The river is divided in two sectors for fishing quotas. The first contains 11 pools and extends {{convert|11|km|mi}}. The second sector contains 14 pools and extends {{convert|20|km|mi}}.
