The Centinela Solar Energy Project is a 170 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic power plant located on {{convert|2067|acre}} of previously disturbed private land southwest of El Centro, California. The project planned to provide at least 235 jobs, generate more than $30 million in tax revenue over its life-time, and deliver enough electricity to power about 82,500 homes. Imperial County gave a green-light to the solar power plant on December 27, 2011, and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approved the right-of-way over 19 acres for the connecting power line on public land.{{cite web |url=http://www.power-eng.com/news/2011/12/1572517780/secretary-salazar-approves-renewable-energy-projects-in-california-oregon-projects-advance-solar-w.html |title=Secretary Salazar approves renewable energy projects |date=2011-12-29 |work=Power Engineering|publisher = Pennwell Corporation }}

The plant went online in tests on July 26, 2013.{{cite web|url=http://ivres.ivedc.com/media/managed/speakerpresentations/Avery_Jim_SDG_E.pdf|title=California's Energy Future}}{{Cite web |url=http://www.sdge.com/newsroom/2013-08-09/three-more-solar-energy-projects-imperial-valley-connect-grid-now# |title=Three more solar energy projects in Imperial Valley connect to the grid; now sending power over the Sunrise Powerlink to SDG&E customers | San Diego Gas & Electric |access-date=2014-05-21 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140521182046/http://www.sdge.com/newsroom/2013-08-09/three-more-solar-energy-projects-imperial-valley-connect-grid-now# |archive-date=2014-05-21 |url-status=dead }}
