Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS; {{Langx|ar|الجهاز المركزي للتعبئة العامة والإحصاء}}) is the official statistical agency of Egypt that collects, processes, analyzes, and disseminates statistical data and conducts the census. CAPMAS was established by a Presidential Decree 2915 in 1964 and is the official provider of data, statistics, and reports.{{cite web|title=Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics of Egypt|url=https://knoema.com/atlas/sources/Central-Agency-for-Public-Mobilization-and-Statistics-of-Egypt|website=knoema - World Data Atlas|accessdate=24 November 2016|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161125045810/https://knoema.com/atlas/sources/Central-Agency-for-Public-Mobilization-and-Statistics-of-Egypt|archivedate=25 November 2016}}

CAPMAS functions support state planning, decision-making and policy assessment but it has been criticized for acting as an information regulator and for failing to provide access to researchers. Researchers must obtain a permit from CAPMAS prior to doing research in the country.{{cite news|last1=Plackett|first1=Benjamin|title=Social Scientists Work Amid Rising Suspicion|url=http://www.al-fanarmedia.org/2016/11/social-scientists-work-amid-rising-suspicion/|date=November 14, 2016|accessdate=24 November 2016|agency=al-fanarmedia|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161123143825/http://www.al-fanarmedia.org/2016/11/social-scientists-work-amid-rising-suspicion/|archivedate=23 November 2016}}{{cite news|last1=El-Din|first1=Mai Shams|title=Egypt's information system is dysfunctional and politicized, say experts|url=http://www.egyptindependent.com//news/egypt-s-information-system-dysfunctional-and-politicized-say-experts|accessdate=24 November 2016|agency=Egypt Independent|date=August 1, 2013|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161125052328/http://www.egyptindependent.com//news/egypt-s-information-system-dysfunctional-and-politicized-say-experts|archivedate=25 November 2016}}

History

A Freedom of Information Act was being considered in 2013 by the Parliament of Egypt, to help ensure high level of transparency and disclosure in line with international best practices but some doubted it would pass and as of 2016, there is no such law for Egypt.{{cite news|last1=El Masry|first1=Sarah|title=Egypt's right to information law|url=http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2013/06/26/egypts-right-to-information-law/|accessdate=24 November 2016|agency=Daily News Egypt|date=June 26, 2013|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161125050536/http://www.dailynewsegypt.com/2013/06/26/egypts-right-to-information-law/|archivedate=25 November 2016}}

The agency participated in World Statistics Day (in October 2015), with activities honoring senior statisticians, holding workshops, and with the launching of their new website.{{cite web|title=World Statistics Day, 10/20/2015|url=https://worldstatisticsday.org/blog.html?c=EGY|website=World Statistics Day|accessdate=24 November 2016}}

Population growth

One of the more important findings, by the agency, has been the type of population growth occurring in Egypt. Since 2014, Major General Abu Bakr al-Gendy, the head of CAPMAS, said that Egypt's population has been growing, for decades, at an unsustainable rate. He said the population grows at an alarming 1 million Egyptians every six months and called this type of growth "a virus" that must be addressed.{{cite web|last1=Wagih|first1=Ahmed|title=Population Growth in Egypt: More People, More Problems?|url=https://timep.org/commentary/population-growth-egypt-people-problems/|website=The Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy|date=23 April 2014 |accessdate=24 November 2016|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161125051911/https://timep.org/commentary/population-growth-egypt-people-problems/|archivedate=25 November 2016}}{{cite web|title=Statement by CAPMAS Head in 2014|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShzGyFQMRG4|website=Youtube|accessdate=24 November 2016}}{{cbignore}}{{Dead Youtube links|date=February 2022}}{{cite news|title=Egypt's overpopulation is a dangerous 'virus' that must be stopped: CAPMAS head|url=http://www.egyptindependent.com//news/egypt-s-overpopulation-dangerous-virus-must-be-stopped-capmas-head|accessdate=24 November 2016|agency=Egypt Independent|date=September 26, 2016|url-status=live|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20161125045710/http://www.egyptindependent.com//news/egypt-s-overpopulation-dangerous-virus-must-be-stopped-capmas-head|archivedate=25 November 2016}}
