Centralteatret was established by the husband-and-wife acting team of Johan Fahlstrøm and Alma Fahlstrøm, in 1897. The theatre was especially known for a repertoire of light genres, including comedy, revues, and operettas, but also classics and new Norwegian drama.{{Cite web|url=http://www.snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Johan_Fahlstr%C3%B8m/utdypning|title=Johan Fahlstrøm|first=Haagen|last=Ringnes|date=27 January 2023|via=Store norske leksikon|access-date=29 September 2010|archive-date=11 October 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121011135639/http://snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Johan_Fahlstr%c3%b8m/utdypning|url-status=live}}{{Cite web|url=http://www.snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Alma_Fahlstr%C3%B8m/utdypning|title=Alma Fahlstrøm|first=Haagen|last=Ringnes|date=27 January 2023|via=Store norske leksikon|access-date=29 September 2010|archive-date=11 October 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121011135900/http://snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Alma_Fahlstr%c3%b8m/utdypning|url-status=live}}

From 1902, Harald Otto (1865–1928) owned and managed the theatre. His son, Reidar Otto (1890–1959), subsequently ran it, while his son, Harald Otto, joined as manager in 1938. Members of the Otto family operated the venue until 1959.{{Cite web|url=http://www.snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Harald_Otto/utdypning|title=Harald Otto|first=Arne|last=Christiansen|date=27 January 2023|via=Store norske leksikon|access-date=29 September 2010|archive-date=11 October 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20121011135911/http://snl.no/.nbl_biografi/Harald_Otto/utdypning|url-status=live}}{{cite web|url= http://www.snl.no/Reidar_Otto|title= Reidar Otto|website= Store norske leksikon|access-date= 1 January 2020|archive-date= 23 May 2019|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20190523120054/https://snl.no/Reidar_Otto|url-status= live}}
