History
Rev. Sabóia de Medeiros, S.J., founded colleges of business and engineering in São Paulo for the fast-growing industrial sector in Brazil. The Superior School of Business Administration (Escola Superior de Administração de Negócios - ESAN) came in 1941 and was then the only business school in Latin America,{{cite web | title = ESAN - ESCOLA SUPERIOR DE ADMINISTRAÇÃO DE NEGÓCIOS |trans-title=ESAN - Superior School of Business Administration | language = Portuguese | accessdate = December 30, 2013 | url = http://www.cienciadaadministracao.com.br/ESAN.htm | last = Egoshi | first = Koiti | website = www.cienciadaadministracao.com.br }} influenced by the Harvard Business School model. The Faculty of Industrial Engineering (Faculdade de Engenharia Industrial - FEI) offering a Chemical Engineering undergraduate degree came in 1946.{{cite web | title = Decreto 20942/46 |trans-title=Decree no. 20942 of 1946 | url = http://www2.camara.gov.br/legin/fed/decret/1940-1949/decreto-20942-9-abril-1946-332838-publicacaooriginal-1-pe.html | website = Brazilian House Computerized Legislation | accessdate = December 30, 2013 | language = Portuguese }} In 1946 also these two colleges joined the Catholic University of São Paulo,{{cite news | newspaper = O Estado de S. In 1963, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering was founded in São Bernardo do Campo, provisionally sharing the city's Industrial Technical School facilities (nowadays ETEC Lauro Gomes{{cite news | url = http://acervo.estadao.com.br/pagina/#!/19860112-34009-nac-0028-999-28-not/busca/Centro+Paula+Souza | title = Na ETI Estadual, o ensino perde nível |trans-title=At State Industrial Technical School, teaching gets its level lowered | newspaper = O Estado de S. The ceremony was attended by the President of Brazil João Goulart.{{cite news | newspaper = O Estado de S. In 1965, the São Bernardo do Campo campus was inaugurated with a {{convert|4600|m2}} building, and plans for a {{convert|40000|m2}} total site area. At that time, FEI offered undergraduate courses in Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering, as well as associate degrees in Automotive, HVAC, machine tools, Textile, Metallurgy, Electronics, and Electrotechnics Operational Engineering.{{cite web | url = http://acervo.estadao.com.br/pagina/#!/19650406-27595-nac-0016-999-16-not/busca/Faculdade+Engenharia+Industrial | title = FEI inaugura novo edifício |trans-title=FEI inaugurates new building | newspaper = O Estado de S. In 1969, FEI sought an agreement with the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo and the Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia to improve its admission test (known as vestibular in Brazil), called MAPOFEI, by using essay rather than multiple choice questions.{{cite news | newspaper = O Estado de S. FCI, the IT branch, was founded in 1999.
Nowadays, the campus at São Bernardo do Campo has 18 buildings on a 24 hectare (60 acres) site{{cite web | url = http://portal.fei.edu.br/en-US/fei/conheca_a_fei/campus_sao_bernardo_do_campo/Pages/campus_sao_bernardo_do_campo.aspx | title = SBC FEI campus website | accessdate = January 9, 2014 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140304214944/http://portal.fei.edu.br/en-US/fei/conheca_a_fei/campus_sao_bernardo_do_campo/Pages/campus_sao_bernardo_do_campo.aspx | archive-date = March 4, 2014 | url-status = dead }} and the campus in São Paulo occupies about one hectare (2 acres).{{cite web | url = http://portal.fei.edu.br/en-US/fei/conheca_a_fei/campus_sao_paulo/Pages/Campus_sao_paulo.aspx | title = SP FEI campus website | accessdate = January 9, 2014 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20140304214931/http://portal.fei.edu.br/en-US/fei/conheca_a_fei/campus_sao_paulo/Pages/Campus_sao_paulo.aspx | archive-date = March 4, 2014 | url-status = dead }}
Elevation to University Center
In 2001, the Brazilian Government established a new rule on higher education, allowing for the foundation of universities which, unlike faculties, could initiate and terminate courses.{{cite web | title = Decreto 3860/01 |trans-title=Decree no. 3860 of 2001 | url = http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/decreto/2001/D3860.htm | website = The Brazilian Presidency Website - Decree 3860/01 | accessdate = January 4, 2014 | language = Portuguese }}
FEI, ESAN, and FCI formed a new university center in 2002, at first called UniFEI.{{cite news | newspaper = O Estado de S. Paulo | page = A13 | date = April 29, 2002 | accessdate = January 4, 2014 | url = http://acervo.estadao.com.br/pagina/#!/20020429-39640-spo-11-ger-a13-not/busca/UniFEI | title = Anúncio publicitário sobre a implantação da UniFEI |trans-title=Advertisement on UniFEI's installment }} The "Uni" was added as a common designation for universities but had to be dropped since it was already in use by the former Escola Federal de Engenharia de Itajubá (Federal Engineering School of Itajubá) - EFEI, upgraded to university under the name Federal University of Itajubá (Universidade Federal de Itajubá) - UNIFEI.{{cite web | language = Portuguese | url = http://www.unifei.edu.br/diversos/a-unifei | website = UNIFEI History | accessdate = January 4, 2014 | title = A UNIFEI - Histórico e Atualidades |trans-title=UNIFEI - History and current affairs }} So FEI remains the acronym for the amalgamated Centro Universitário da Fundação Educacional Inaciana Pe.
