Bilgin Özçalkan ({{IPA|tr|bilˈɟin ˈœzt͡ʃaɫˌkan}}; born 31 December 1976), also known by his stage name Ceza ({{IPA|tr|dʒeˈzaː|pron}}, Turkish for "punishment"), is a Turkish rapper, singer, and songwriter.

Early works

In 1995, Özçalkan started a group called U.C.S and performed with this group until about 1998. His group Nefret was signed under Hammer Music in 2000, leading to the release of the album Meclis Ala – İstanbul. In 2001, Özçalkan released the album Anahtar. The title track, which shares the same name as the album, was the first to have an accompanying music video. The album was a great success, and Özçalkan performed at many concerts promoting it.{{cite web|url=https://www.mailce.com/ceza-kimdir-ne-zaman-dogdu-muzik-hayati-cezanin-album-isimleri.html|title=Ceza kimdir ne zaman doğdu müzik hayatı ceza\'nın albümleri nelerdir|date=22 June 2008|website=Mailce.com|access-date=22 June 2019|archive-date=22 June 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190622200550/https://www.mailce.com/ceza-kimdir-ne-zaman-dogdu-muzik-hayati-cezanin-album-isimleri.html|url-status=usurped}}

However, Özçalkan's major breakthrough came in 2004 when he was invited to perform at RockIstanbul, one of Turkey's biggest rock festivals. This opportunity allowed him to showcase his rap music in an environment featuring some of Turkey’s most popular music acts.{{cite web|url=https://www.mynet.com/ceza-rock-istanbul-canli-performans-2999804-myvideo|title=Ceza Rock İstanbul Canlı Performans|last=Mynet|website=Mynet Video|access-date=22 June 2019|archive-date=22 June 2019|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190622200548/https://www.mynet.com/ceza-rock-istanbul-canli-performans-2999804-myvideo|url-status=live}}

In 2005, at the Turkish rock music festival Rock 'n Coke, Ceza performed a profanity-laden freestyle rap directed at singer Kıraç, who had made dismissive comments about rap not being real music.Ceza's freestyle verse at the 2005 Rock 'n Coke. {{Citation|last=ultraslan39|title=ceza – kıraç|date=14 January 2007|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdueIhU2z7U |archive-url=https://ghostarchive.org/varchive/youtube/20211222/FdueIhU2z7U |archive-date=2021-12-22 |url-status=live|access-date=8 May 2017}}{{cbignore}}

Following these events, Özçalkan collaborated with artist Mercan Dede on his album Su ("Water").{{cite web|url=https://www.discogs.com/Mercan-Dede-Su/release/1319640|title=Mercan Dede – Su|website=Discogs|access-date=22 June 2019|archive-date=7 October 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20181007110342/https://www.discogs.com/Mercan-Dede-Su/release/1319640|url-status=live}}

Personal life

Özçalkan was born on 31 December 1976 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, but his birth was officially registered on 1 January 1977. Before pursuing a career in rap, he worked for eight years as an electrician. In 2007, he became the first and only Turkish singer to win an MTV Music Award. That same year, he launched his own clothing brand, Evin Delisi.ED BRAND https://www.evindelisi.com.tr/ {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190129011328/https://www.evindelisi.com.tr/ |date=29 January 2019 }} Retrieved 24 November 2019.
