Buchanan was hired on June 29, 2017, after previously serving two seasons as the assistant general manager for the Charlotte Hornets.{{Cite news|url=https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/19769149/indiana-pacers-hire-chad-buchanan-new-general-manager|title=Pacers tab Buchanan as new general manager|work=ESPN.com|access-date=2018-05-16}} Prior to the Charlotte job, Buchanan spent 10 years in the Portland Trail Blazers organization, primarily as the director of college scouting.
