Music and Lyrics

Stills said "it was about growing up in the south, attending the debutante balls, but Graham likes to refer to it as the Crosby, Stills & Nash theme song, which I suppose it is".{{Cite AV media notes |title=CSN |title-link=CSN (box set) |first=Stephen |last=Stills |author-link=Stephen Stills |others=Crosby, Stills & Nash |date=1991 |type=booklet |publisher=Atlantic Records |chapter=CSN Box Set Tracklist |chapter-url=http://albumlinernotes.com/CSN_Box_Set_Tracklist.html}} Jerry Garcia performs the pedal steel guitar played throughout the song. The song was recorded at Wally Heider Recording, Studio III in June 1970, with overdubs recorded at Criteria Recording Studios.{{Cite AV media notes |title=Carry On |title-link=Carry On (Stephen Stills album) |others=Stephen Stills |date=2013 |type=booklet |publisher=Atlantic Records |page=72}}

Reception

Paste Magazine called it a "catchy pop hit". Cash Box described the song as being "a production showcase, rather than a top forty-rhythm outing" and more of "an FM preview teaser than a teen sales effort."{{cite news|title=CashBox Record Reviews|date=May 29, 1971|page=16|accessdate=2021-12-10|url=https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Music/Cash-Box/70s/1971/Cash-Box-1971-05-29.pdf|newspaper=Cash Box}}
