The next stage of McSwain's career took place in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), firstly at Northcote in 1931, with whom he appeared in a narrow Grand Final loss to Oakleigh, as a follower. However the next season he played in a winning VFA Grand Final, this time at full-back.{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article205494706 |title=ASSOCIATION FINAL. |newspaper=The Age |issue=24,168 |location=Victoria, Australia |date=26 September 1932 |page=12}}

Appointed captain-coach of Preston in 1933, he steered them to third position in his second and last year in charge, but missed the finals through injury.{{cite web|url=http://australianfootball.com/players/player/Charlie%2BMcSwain/4254| title=Charlie McSwain – Player Bio| publisher=Australian Football|accessdate=14 August 2015}}
